What is the etiquette in bars?

I ordered a long island at a bar last night. One of the weakest I've ever had. Kind of sweet. My friend tells me that I should just go up to the bartender and tell them that there's not enough alcohol. He said, "It's a pretty standard thing people do in bars." Not that I've spent that much time in bars, but I've never heard someone go up to the bartender and complain. I just chalk it up as a bar with weak drinks and move on.

Anyone try this with success?

Depends on the liquor laws of the state.

In Utah they are weak because the laws only allow them to put so much alcohol in each drink.

i've never asked to had it more alcoholic, but some times they'll make it and i drink it in front of them and they'll ask "is that ok? need more soda/jack?" So i'm guessing it will be alright if you ask them to make it more alcoholic.

i wouldn't complain to the bartender he/she can do nasty things to your drink any time they want.

what?!?!?! man, that sucks. must have been part of the "for the olympics only" liquor laws.

i found it really ironic that you could buy beer in the grocery store there on sunday, but you can't here in ga.

I'd have asked politely, stated that it tasted a bit weak. Most would understand and make it a little bit stiffer. Food preperation is an art, not everyone likes the same thing. If you got a steak and it was too rare, send it back to be thrown on the grill, the cooks will understand and cook it up a bit. It's not an insult unless you're rude about it.

i think it depends alot on the bartender and his attitude @ the time.
one of my dad's friends spent like 8 bucks on a margarita @ dinner. it was very very weak. so he asked for more tequila. the waitress came back with a shot glass and we watched her pour it in.
she didnt seem to care and added to the fact the margarita was 8 freakin bucks. i would do the same, if i spend 8 bucks on a drink, i want to feel the effects of said drink.

Of course you should complain...I've had good bartenders tell me before giving me the drink "if it's too weak, let me know", and it was, so he added probably another half shot. Of course, if you intend to have a couple of drinks that evening, easiest way is to introduce yourself and tip him/her well after the first drink. When I visited my friend in DC over the summer, I gave the bartender $10 tip with the first drink, we spoke for a bit, and he treated me very well for the rest of the evening (I tipped another dollar or so with the other drinks too).

If you can't spend money like that (I can't afford to live like that anymore), just take your time, be courteous, and if the bartender's good, they should understand.

Yeah, they just changed the laws again a few months ago. :(

Now you're not allowed to have more than one alcoholic drink in front of you at any time. They also changed the "total amount of alcohol" allowed in a mixed drink.

What really pisses me off is that they present their proposals to the LDS church to get their approval before putting the changes into law. So much for separation of church and state.

Never had that problem (bartender/bar owner friends)... but I've seen it done.

When I was in college, my frat big brother was a bartender and always messed up peoples drinks when I showed up. Strange it was always what I drank too. Then he'd realize it right before he gave it to them. "Hey didn't you order ....?" "Yeah" (turning to me) "Here drink this."

Then not long ago was a friend at a place we hung out at pretty regularly, she'd drink with us while she was working. Used to bring me shots to try. She was a lot of fun.

Ah the good old days before...

when i was there, you couldn't have more than one drink at a time. i'd usually so "ok", chug the first, and have 'em put down the second.

not to say you couldn't get drunk - i just hope the bar we frequented didn't plan on any expansions based on the pre-olympics traffic ;)

From here:

each club patron may have no more than 2.75 ounces of spirituous liquor at a time before the patron.

What are you doing in Utah? They don't allow polygamy any more, and they have horrid liquor laws. What the hell?

Move to Minneapolis, we'd party with you guys all the time. :D

i once had to do that for a girl. i took the screwdriver back to the bar and asked if it was premixed... he held a vodka bottle upsidedown over the glass and said "say when." He got a phat tip.
