this happened to a friend of mine.

Him: "I wanna install this game, but it wont."

Her: "well, i'll walk you through it"

::she tells him to go to explorer and find the install, or setup in the cd.

Him: "there isnt any"

::she battles with him for a good 30 min about it.

Her: "What kind of game is it?"

Him: A computer game, i say it on tv, its called play station, it looks really neat."

You could hear the screams in my office

phone rings

user: I just got a phone bill for over $500

me:are you using our internet service?

user: I tried this MSN cd with XXX free hours

me:they don't have any servers here, its a long distance call

user:eek:h ok thank you....click

me:couldn't help but laugh and tell the others what was said

I'm not making this up. Most anyone that works as a retail store tech or ISP
(we did both) could tell you they get at least half a dozen dumb questions per day.

Had a friend of a friend I was helping over the phone and told him to right-click... He had no idea what a right-click was. This happened last night. (I think he is left-handed)

User: I tried to do something and the computer said "File not found". Then I went into the Explorer and used Find and it found it. Why doesn't the computer just find the file itself? Why does it make me do it?

Me: I think your computer is lazy.

User: So I should upgrade?

"That's a 486 right?"

--from a "computer guru" (self described of course) after I opened a system that he wanted me to part into another system, viewed the 4PCI-3ISA slot arrangement, 430VX chipset, two 16MB SIMMs, Intel retail HSF with the word "PENTIUM" on the top, and staggered PGA in full view while I was checking to see what clock speed the CPU was. (150MHz)

...I would've said "yes" (he suckered me into doing alot of work for free) but the case that he gave me as "payment" had a PPro150 CPU and 450KX based motherboard in it :)

...he ended up happy atleast :D

Edit: he wanted me to swap anything useful (ie: just the RAM) into a 486DX33 system.

I sold a computer to someone once, and had to give her a demonstration on how to use the mouse. She honestly had no clue.

I work in an AIX lab at school. I had to give a 20 minute demo on how to ftp a word file to the PC's from the professor's supercomputer account. The user kept asking me why AIX cannot open Words files. She went on to say that the supercomputer is not very super if it cannot open Word documents. This computer has 112 PowerPC processors and ~30 GB of RAM. Not what you call slow. I can understand that you sometimes have to explain FTP and such to new users, but this girl needed the file for a 600-level computer engineering class. She knew NOTHING about computers outside MS land. If something could not be opened in IE, Office, or Visual Studio, she was clueless. Unfortunately, some proffessors are now MS whores, and discourage the use of *nix systems.

Happened to a friend:

After being told about the Anna Kourikova (sp?) virus, and reading an email about how NOT TO OPEN any messages with her name in it.

Friend: Didn't you get the warining message about the virus?
User: Yes, of course.
Friend: Did you read it?
User: Yeah.
Friend: THEN WHY DID YOU OPEN THAT EMAIL WHEN I SPECIFICALLY TOLD YOU NOT TO?

Here it comes...

User: I wanted to see the picture.

Priceless.........

"When will DSL be offering T3 speeds?"

"I have a 486 with no CD-ROM, Can you copy the DSL "modem" drivers/software onto 3.5" floppies & send it to me?"

But a T3 is only about 44-45 Mbps, I though. There are DSL standards being created now that go over 70 Mbps.

Me: Ok, first I'll need you to go to My Computer.
Woman (rudely): How am I supposed to get to your computer? Hm?

Dead serious...

Had a coworker ask me this over summer, "So, do you think that IBM-compatible computers will ever catch up to the Mac in terms of speed, stability, and quality of the operating system?"

I had to ask him if he was serious. When he said he was serious I asked if he had been hit in the head with a heavy blunt object recently. He hadn't used an x86 since DOS 4.0. Stupid Mac network, I was the only x86 guy working there.

Oh god, I've gotten those before. I got one guy dialing out of a DOS prog before - that he wrote himself! :Q And he expected me to support it - LOL

Actually, Poop, there are new DSL standards that are being invented that will go above 70Mbps, namely VDSL. But that isn't going to happen for 10 years or so I think.

<< There are DSL standards being created now that go over 70 Mbps >>

I think that Viper deals with residential DSL lines. The thought of someone needing a 45Mbps+ connection in their house is kind of out there. Even if DSL was set to surpass T3s - how much do you think that'd cost? I'm sure it'll be way out of the average DSL user's range :)
