What is the difference SDRAM vs DDR Ram???

I'm being very behind from current computer technology, please bear with me.
What is the difference between SDRAM and DDR Ram?? Is DDR ram asny faster than SDRAM??? I see that DDR Ram is slightly higher in price, but no much. Some motherboards have SDRAM, some mobo have DDR RAM. Is that because of CPU specification??? say over 1ghz, all mobo have DDR Ram???

what is the number that's next to DDR Ram 2100 ???

crucial can explain it best...but basically ddr has twice the data rate as sdram

I'm not too clear on it either, but I think DDR gives around a 5% increase, but it also runs hotter.

DDR SDRAM transfers data on both the rising and falling edge of the clock cycle, and so it theoreticallly can transfer twice as much data at the same clockspeed as SDRAM.

Depends upon the motherboard chipset, the specifics on the RAM in question and the CPU in use.
But is general, yes it is safe to say that DDR SDRAM is somewhat faster then SDR SDRAM.

It depends upon the motherboard chipset as to which types of memory are supported. Some chipsets can support both types, and some can only support one or neither. Even if the chipset can support both types the manufacturer can choose to only put on SDRAM or DDR SDRAM sockets or put sockets for both.
There are many motherboards that support processors faster then 1GHz with conventional SDRAM.

That is the theoretical maximum bandwidth it is capable of sustaining.
PC2100 DDR SDRAM= 2100 MB/sec maximum transfer rate.

This is contrary to SDRAM standards in which the "PCXXX" rating referred to the clockspeed it was specified to operate at, and did not indicate the maximum bandwidth.

There is a performance boost from DDR RAM.  I just upgraded from a board that used PC133 SDRAM to a board that uses PC2100 DDR RAM, and even though I have done almost no tweaking I'm seeing about a 25% boost in Sandra memory benchmarks.  To put it VERY SIMPLY, DDR RAM is SDRAM that can transfer the data twice as fast by using the rising edge and falling edge of the memory clock.  There is more to DDR but that's enough to get the idea across.  There is no requirement as far as CPU specification, DDR is the next step in the inexpensive memory evolution.
