What is the difference between SP1 and SP1a?

Microsoft recently made Windows XP Service Pack 1a available. The release notes cover both versions, so I am not sure what the difference is. Does it include Windows Media Player 9? DirectX9? Tablet PC enhancements (file viewer)?

i'm guessing some java stuff won't run, or won't run correctly without it. i'm curious to see what would happen if you installed sp 1a and then put sun's jvm on.

I thought that the court case mandated that Microsoft include a Java VM (albeit Microsoft or Sun) in the OS? Was there a development I missed?

SP1b will be realeased this summer and it will have the JRE from Sun included.

Why not have the MS JVM?
Some java applications will not run under Sun, there are a number of java applictions that have been specifically developed for the MS JVM and just plain dont work with the JRE from Sun... :|

In other words, they aren't Java (tm) applications. I know you're in a bind, but replacing legacy applications with strict runtime requirements is the only solution to that problem.

The MS VM is ancient. For most consumers, the Sun Java2 VM is the way to go if you need Java applet support in your browser.

And the appeals court has put Judge Motz' ruling that MS has to ship the Sun JRE on hold.

Oh I'm not arguing against this, I think this is a good thing for Sun as well.

My point was just that it's bad news for those 3rd party developers who have products based off of the VM from MS and now it wont work and they have to re-develop everything. Sure you could always argue that they should have developed them to work with the JRE from Sun in the first place, but for a time there that would have been a bad idea because of limited consumer support...

As far as I know MS is still required to ship Windows, IE and their SP's with the JRE from Sun for now on (hence SP1b this summer). The ruling getting put on hold was just MS buying themselves some development time.

Their incorporated java was buggy and outdated and needed patches for security holes anyway, Sun's java is light years ahead so the changes are a Good Thing?

You missed the ruling of the appeals court that was favorable to microsoft... look it up I don't a link handy but "The Register" has a story about it as always....
