what is the difference between hurting a cat, and hurting a rat?

Nocturnal

Lifer
if you were to hurt a cat harmfully, people would be on your ass like no theres no tomorrow, right?

now on the other hand, you hurt a rat, and they praise you for it.

what is the difference between one or the other?

why dont people who do research on animals use cats instead of rats? or dogs, or chickens for that matter?

anyone care to elaborate?

Lemme guess....you wanted to see what would happen if you put Fluffy in the microwave and now you need something to tell the cops, right?

no, not at all. i want to know why people justify killing a rat, and when and if someone hurts a cat they go all balistics and call the peta police and come to have you arrested. why dont they arrest people who hurt rats, chicken, ANTS, COCKAROACHES, and all the other pests that are from planet earth?

Actually people hurt plenty of cats and dogs....it just depends on why you do it. If it's for fun.....cops will haul you off. If it's to do research in the development of a drug that may save lives or improve quality of life for humans....stockholders will love you. Not as much research is done with "higher" animals cuz they're more expensive and you have to jump through exponentially more red tape and paperwork to get the research approved as you go up the food chain.

yes, they both feel pain.

whats the difference between killing a cockaroach, an ant, and other small species that are pests to us?

Dude, are you stoned? You're asking very "my buds and I just smoked a bowl and came up with this question" kinda questions....

(ie- there's no definitive answer to your question....take a philosophy course or two)

the difference is perception, people perceive cats to be pleasant and cute creatures while rats are nasty and a pest. But both are used in research because for certain tests cats are better, they just aren't as prevalent due to price and protests.

I was kidding.....the second bit of that message was what I was really getting at. I'll repeat. There's no answer to your question....only opinions. You could justify killing almost anything for any reason or vice versa.

Woah, it was in the paper this morning that some kid from my school shot a cat last night. It didn't give his name and nobody could figure out who it was at school. Was it you?

What context are you talking about here? Medical research, just hurting them for fun, what?

I think it's because rats are considered vermin, can make nests in your home, may carry disease, and the only sure way to get rid of them is to kill them. It's not easy to catch them and put them in the wild and the humane society won't take them so the options for dealing with them are limited.

For the most part, cats aren't considered intrusive to humans and it's much easier to deal with them humanely if there is a problem. Hurting a cat is considered cruel, because cats usually aren't a bother or a danger to people. Now if the cat had rabies or something, then I don't think there's a problem.

Go watch Pulp Fiction and listen to what Vincent and Jules are saying about pigs and dogs. It is all based on perception.

Thanks Yakko.

I think it's because we have domesticated cats and dogs into our society. Over the years our perception has changed from a cat being a regular animal to something of a companion. Rats are just that... Disease carrying vermin, rated down with most bugs and other disgusting things.
