Tacos hurt if you don't chew them properly. Burritos just block your airway.

Taco:

A corn tortilla folded around a filling such as ground meat or cheese.

Burrito:

A flour tortilla wrapped around a filling, as of beef, beans, or cheese.

I used to think that Taco's are just smaller burritos that are not rolled up,
but then I saw rolled up small tacos so there goes that theory.

a Taco is usually a crunchy shell, ground beef, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. etc .etc. a Burrito is a soft flour tortilla, refried beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. etc. Got it? good, now go eat dinner. ;)

thats the problem, everybody uses the word usually. Yes a taco is USUALLY a crunchy shell, but it can also be a soft shell. So where can we exactly draw the line between a taco and a burrito.

I went to the one place where the taco and burrito are identical with the exception of size....which got me pondering.

heh, ever been to mexico?

from what I've seen - taco = hard corn shell. Burrito - soft flour tortilla

So what Taco Bell or Del Taco calls a soft taco is not really a taco?
But wait, Taco is an American invention so why would people South of the Border
be defining what a taco really is?

I'd bet you couldn't eat 5-10 tacos at the restaurant where I work... at least not in one meal. Probably not in 2 either.

Anyway, I agree with the posters above - usually corn for taco (hard OR soft shell) and flour for burrito. Nonetheless, there's a bit of overlap - using a flour shell (soft) and flavored meat, cheese, and lettuce would usually be called a taco rather than a burrito. But, once you toss in some refried beans... it loses all rights to be named "taco"

are you for real? you have no idea how to tell the difference?

and basically a burrito makes you feel fuller. think "buuurrrrrrrrrrp-rito"

You don't know either?

Well, at my local "authentic" Mexican joint (Taqueria La Michoacana, Ridge Pike, Norristown PA), I like to think they know what they are doing. The tacos only come in SOFT CORN tortillas, and each taco is double-wrapped. They come with a variety of fillings like beef, chicken, pork, chorizo and egg and even beef tongue or brain if that's your speed. ALong with the meat is some cheese and a little bit of lettuce and that's it.

A burrito is wraped in a large soft flour tortilla and always comes with rice, beans, and an assortment of vegetables. The meat is optional.

Man those things are tiny and they hardly put any filling in them at Del Taco. Dont' eat at those places. Rubio's and Chipotle = Godlike.
