The majority of Republicans believe that all citizens of this nation are entitled to only three things. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, in such a manner as is least unfettered by any governmental entity whether local, state, or federal. I am not my brother's keeper nor he mine unless either of us wishes to assume that responsibility. Neither I nor you should be compelled by the state to support the other. Whether either of us achieves great wealth or stature should be totally resultant to our own strength of character and ambitious endeavors and not at the expense of or dependent upon any other citizen's achievements.

The responsibility, and the rewards, for one's choices, whether positive or negative in outcome, accrues to the individual and cannot be relegated to nor abrogated by the state. Equality does not mean equality of results but rather equality of opportunity. What one accomplishes, or doesn't, is completely dependent upon one's exercise and discharge of the freedoms granted to every citizen. Justice and the greater good of society is better served through independence and liberty.

The majority of Democrats believe that a societal greater good is best achieved through a limited abrogration of liberty and the pursuit of happiness to the state. Individualism is curtailed in an effort to achieve a greater equality of results. Responsibility for and the rewards of one's own actions and achievements is somewhat shared by society as a whole. Balance and commonality is attempted to be achieved by efforts toward the elimination of extremes at both ends of the spectrum of the human condition.

There is much common ground and fundamental agreement in myriad matters which fall outside of this limited perusal but I believe these points to be the foundational differences between the two philosophies.

Comedian Lewis Black descibed it best by saying that,
"The only difference between a republican and a democrat is that one sucks and the other blows."
