What is the Deal with the Samsung Hate?

Since I was late to the mobile devices party, I don't understand this whole "anything but Samsung" vitriol in the mobile sector.

From what I do understand apparently they were bad about updating old phones to new versions of Android (even though every company seems to screw it up on one phone or another), and that TouchWiz is the second most hated vender-GUI to Blur. That can't be everything, as when I search the forum some people hate Samsung's mobile devices like overweight kids hate fat camp.

So what am I missing? Thanks in advance.

They made a lot of promises that they didn't keep. When I got my Fascinate they said Froyo would be released shortly after. Then it was delayed and delayed and they kept making excuses (it's not finished, we need time, etc) while the European phones got it. It finally appeared 7 months later.

That and, as mentioned above, the GPS bug infuriated a ton of people.

Personally I plan on steering clear of Samsung phones in the future, not worth the frustration.

The GPS thing I can understand because that is frustrating. If I bought one and it never worked I could understand avoiding the company in the future. But most of the posts when I search complain about a lack of updates.

But I don't completely understand the not updating issue. I mean Moto seems the best at rolling out updates, but few give them credit for that because they lock their bootloaders. Samsung isn't as quick with official updates, but it seems they have the most hackable phones (outside of Nexuses). It seems to me that its just a choice thing- if you want the vendor to update get a Moto, if you want to update yourself get a Samsung. Either way I don't see the reason for people to get SO upset about it.

So I must be missing something, hence why I asked.

More than just that, they had the Moment with borked gps and random data-lockups which never got fixed and the Behold II which had hardware problems as well. They couldn't release an Android phone without major bugs. It seems the new Galaxy S-2 is their first Android phone without major bugs. Plus they've given devs a Galaxy S-2 and no locked bootloader so they're getting better in my book. Their hate has definitely been warranted but like I said they're doing things to better their image.

They seem to have realized they screwed up and are trying harder now.

I can understand the hate though, spending some serious $ on a device you're supposed to use for 2 years and getting a screwed GPS or refusing to come up with promised software updates left a lot of people with a bad taste for Samsung's mobile division...

It's the Gadgets, Gear, and Phones forum. Replace Samsung with any other company, brand, product and it wouldn't change much.

I started toreally hate samsung when i got the behold 2 after watchingtheir commercials which stated they were rolling out 2.0. Then they pulled the commercials and gave us 1.6 which is a pos. I gave them another chance and got the vibrant, i couldn't give a shit about froyo but with the fuckedup gps i hate the bastards.

and they released the instink phone on sprint. That basically shot their reputation down the toilette, especially when their marketing team DIRECTLY compared it to the iphone.

Yeh I got burned on the Epic.. but man the GS2 looks soo good...

and the EVO3D did not get a good review at Endagaget so this is gonna be my only Sprint option better than the EVO for a while.

I had one for a couple of days and it was pretty much flawless, of course the gps for some reason wasn't functioning at all. Not sure if it had to do with it being a uk phone on the other side of the world but the gps wouldn't lock into any satellites at all, i sold it and think im gonna wait for the local version.

Honestly, for real world use (not benchmarking etc) the Evo is pretty good, particularly for the free tethering...

You didn't read this... They are saying significantly worse battery life than the EVO..
that in my eyes and the camera issues make this a no go for me..

Which brings us to battery life, or the lack thereof. After topping off the EVO 3D, it only took 14 hours and 44 minutes to drain the beefy 1730mAh battery down to 7%. We barely used the handset during that time -- we made a 15-minute call and slept 6 hours. The rest of it was spent taking a half-dozen pictures, and occasionally checking 3 email accounts plus one Twitter account with all the radios enabled (save for Bluetooth). This is particularly surprising when you consider the Sensation's stellar battery life. 3D photography is particularly taxing on the battery. We saw the charge level drop from full to 60% in about an hour and a half during which we snapped about 80 photos and captured 4 short videos (about half of this content was in 3D). So, whatever you do, be prepared to bring a charger along with that EVO 3D.

Samsung Galaxy S line was great but it still puzzled me how a company can get away the entire line GPS mostly not working.
Any Galaxy S phone should have been replaced no questions asked.
GPS not working is a much bigger issue than the so called death grip yet the outcry was much smaller.

Yeah, I did, but I was unclear, I meant the original EVO 4G...

The EVO 3D is shaping up to be pretty lame...

I agree 100%. It was a worldwide problem yet no forced recall anywhere even in Europe where they seem to have better consumer protection than us. It has me scratching my head and wondering who and how Samsung paid off.

Well it was a uk phone, maybe it wasn't setup for north american satellites or something like that. But the uk guys don't have this issue, but it was sever enough for me to sell the phone, don't want to go through this gps bs again.

I get lock within a few seconds...
Now that's weird, the gps test would find satellites almost instantly for me but it just wouldn't lock onto them, then the satellites would be lost and it would start the search all over again but never lock on. Sounds more of a software issue.

Um GPS is just that GLOBAL positioning.. the whole idea of GPS is being lost in the middle of the Sahara and being able to tell to a millimeter were you are and which way to get out..

There is nothing that should have to be done other than a reboot of a phone when arriving on any continent of the world ( and mainly that's just to grab a local roaming tower not for the GPS)

This is troubling..

but Dob is saying his is working..
thats the same kinda random BS the Epic suffered from.. 1 device would work others wouldnt..

as CVSIN said, it should work everywhere - my desire is a UK phone and worked just fine in cuba, alaska and canada with gps (no reboot, and i was in airplane mode to avoid receiving texts etc and the roaming charges).

well, i'm getting my sgs2 today (when the damn courier gets off his ass and delivers it) so will test the sgs2 gps today at some point.
