What is the deal with Mobo names?

Why can't they come up with cool names for mother boards. It seems like all the Athlon based boards contain A,K,7,V, & M in different combinations. Why not giving them cool names like Yellow Jacket, Reaper, or Wildcat. Would make it much easier to remember.

The model names are kinda like the numbers on the processor. It makes it easier for the manufacturer to classify which one is which.

The K & 7 is used for the processor, Athlon = K7. The M usually refers to a micro-ATX mobo. The A is used in the Asus board, the V is just a letter they grabbed (to my best guess), and the X or T usually refers to the chipset (KX133 or KT133). It would actually be harder for them (manufacturers) if they gave the boards cool names because names easily change, model/part/tool numbers do not change as easily. Why change the K7T Pro2a to anything else? It is already kinda hard to mistake and wouldn't be made any easier under the current classification system.

Maybe I am really far off. I am basing this knowledge on my experience with the automotive industry and working in the shop with tool numbers. They numbers had a special meaning to the shop but were actually kinda hard to remember and write out. This helped to deter changing them as time went on.

I understand why it is this way having spent years with MilSpecs. (for the draft dodgers that is military specifications)

It would be quite nice to have something more cool to say than, "a 1G Athlon on an Abit KT7A Raid", like, "yeah a hot Snatch Master @ a damn near peak sliding all over a Globe Trotting Gash Hound...version pi".

I like it.

<< A,K,7,V, & M >>

In ASUS' case,

A stands for Athlon, K or 7 also indicates Athlon,
V indicates VIA chipset, M indicates AMD chipset, A stands for ALi chipset.

Andy, ASUS has used 'M' to indicate 'mixed' not AMD. By 'mixed' I mean AMD North and VIA South.

My guess on the CUSL2 is: for Coppermine Processors (CU) and based on the i185 Solano chipset(SL), no clue what the 2 is, have no good guess on what the C is either.

I stand corrected regarding the M.

CUSL2:

Coppermine Solano-2. The i815 is the Solano, the i815E is the Solano 2 with ICH2.
