LOL, I love your signature btw 😉
One of the areas where distributed computing is mainstream is in complex 3D modelling applications, in which networked computers can share the load when something needs to be rendered, increasing productivity. The public areas seem to be dominated by projects like Distributed.net and SETI@home, where it's not a critical problem if a piece of data gets lost, since it can be handed out again later. It looks to me like there is a bright future for the idea as a whole, when I look at how many people already participate (or have participated) in SETI@home and the Distributed.net projects. The "teams" aspect gives us a lot of motivation and incentive apart from the actual project itself, as you will notice if you hang out in this Forum (and a lot of other teams' forums). 🙂
To sum it up, I think we're approaching the "flash point." Paid distributed computing is becoming a reality, and when it reaches the point where a typical home user can pay for the internet connection by having an icon on the TaskBar, you can bet people will be interested in it. Those who have an interest in the projects themselves enjoy being part of them for that reason. Those who enjoy the team aspect enjoy being part of them for that. There are a few naysayers who will tell you it's a waste of time and so on, too. To each his own. 🙂
