What is the coolest running cpu out there?

currently? probably an intel atom, but they're all enclosed in laptops so they're warmer.

for desktops, maybe a 45nm low clocked AMD x2

i'm gonna go with intel e5200 with either speedstep enabled, or for lower heat multiplier reduced and undervolted

I could be wrong, but that would be my choice if I were looking for a cool running cpu.

 
Depends on cooling solution.

C'mon, OP question is too vague. Could be answered in terms of TDP, or undervolted/underclocked state, etc
 
For mainstream dual cores, I'd assume the Athlon BE-2xxx, 4850e, and 5050e and the Intel E5xxx chips are in the running, although I don't exactly which one would be "cooler" or use less power, since total platform considerations is also a major factor.

For high end dual core, Intel certainly wins with the E7xxx and E8xxx chips. Although the Phenom II X3 chips run hotter and use more power than Intel's duals, I'm sure performance is much better for multithreaded applications.

For quad core, Intel also wins with any of its 45nm Core 2 Quads.
 
I would say anything from Intel thats dual core. I swapped an E6400 into my Q6600 build and saw a 5C decrese in CPU temps.

P.S. What about teh sensors?
 
Intel 45nm duals are the clear winners.

AMD's X2 series is still 65nm and cranks out more heat than the equivalent Intel chips (plus the Intels do more work/cycle so they're faster at the same clockspeed).
 
I need a quad core because I do much video editing that puts a lot of strain on the cpu. I will do just a slight oc. I don't like to go more than .4 from what it was. I don't care if amd or intel at this point. I want speed and power with cool if that can be had. It will be an air cooled fan (non stock).
 
intel ULV processor.

Downvolted and downclocked Wolfdale, e5400.

However i think a ULV intel Lappy processor, since we are throwing atom out the window will probably the coolest chip.

People here will remember my obsessive investigations to get "the last grain of rice" from air-cooling in 2007. Certainly, I -- maybe even others -- learned some things.

At some margin, cooling will improve over-clocking potential, and low-TDP processors may figure into that equation.

For longevity, while cooler is better, adequate cooling that stays within the processor's temperature specs --- even with over-clocking scenarios -- is "decent" without spending too much time and tedium on enhanced cooling.

The biggest threat to the processor's longevity seems to be voltage. And I usually draw the line in voltage settings to stay within the processor's voltage spec. This also moderates the temperature increase to be expected from over-clocking.

but the question is worded more like "are intel cpus or amd cpus cooler overall"...
intel is overall cooler, you can find an AMD cpu that is cooler than an intel cpu, but if for some reason you want to do zero reseach, then buying an intel cpu gives you a higher "chance" of ending with one that is cooler.
 
Yeah the i7's do run hotter according to specs than Core 2's. Their TJMax is I believe 100C which is quite a lot for a 45nm chip. I think the Core 2 TJMax is 90C. If you run Linx (like IntelBurn) on a Core i7 with air cooling at voltages around 1.3-1.35V you are likely to see temps of 78-86C for the cores.

With my current "day-to-day" overclock at 3.2GHZ, 1.18Vc, 1.2Vq, the highest a core got in Linx 1.5GB was 60 degrees. At 3.8GHZ+Turbo or 4GHZ It goes up another 10-15C each, with 1.3xV or 1.25V and LLC enabled. I've got pretty good airflow in my case though and I've seen temps a lot hotter for other users.

I still an Intel ULV C2D (ultra Low voltage) chip will beat an Atom. Only it costs 5x as much as an atom.

You guys are probably wondering how low voltage and heat?

i was using chipset coolers on the cpu. Thats how low heat those chips were.
