What is the cheapest ms office suite that I can get?

I don't have any actual experience with any of thr newer versions of office. My system has office 2002. This software is for my wifes machine. I would try and reuse 2002 but I can't find the product key.
 
I'm also not sure if open office would be compatible with my ms office at home. I might also have to use it with my work and they are ms based.

Go for the Home and Student edition. Outlook is MS's mail client only.

Outlook 2007 is just the Outlook application only. MS Works gives you home-oriented word processor and spreadsheet applications but they're not the same as Word and Excel, though there is some [limited] intercompatibility.

That leaves Office 2007 Home and Student retail for 3 PCs, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote:

Not a bad deal, really. The OEM version for 1 PC is not any cheaper (maybe a few bucks, but that's it).

Edit: I just realized you are running Vista. Office XP/2002 may have compatibility issues with Vista. As for finding your product key...

You might be able to fetch it from the registry using a key finder like Magical JellyBean.

Alternatively, you may be able to obtain a new replacement product key from Microsoft:

The free OpenOffice is compatible with most Word/Excel files. It can open, create and save .doc and .xls. I've been using it for years. Exchanging files with MS Office users works fine with the standard file formats.

The only problem I ever had was opening a .docx file. The graphics didn't come through exactly as they appeared in MS Office. As long as you don't save from MS Office in that format, you should be fine going back and forth.

OpenOffice is a free download, so why not try it out and test all your files before deciding to pick up MS Office or not?
 
You definitely do not want MS Works .. junk .. Depending on how long you can wait, you can sometimes get programs like MS Office for free thru
club.live.com ... You amass points by playing puzzles .. It would take about 6 weeks of play to reach the points for MS Office Ultimate on that site
but you would save hundreds of dollars in cost,
 
I like Open Office too. It's ideal for the non-hardcore office app user. MS might have better advanced tools(I honestly don't know), but Open Office covers the core functionality ver well.
 
Apparently the Toshiba came with a trial version of Home and Student 2007. So I activated the 60 day trial and turned it over to the wife. So far she absolutley loves it. Bottom line is NewEgg will deliver my personal copy in a couple of days.

Question: For full activation do I just need to add the product key when I get Student in the mail? That just seems too easy.

I plan on trialing open office on my machine in a couple of weeks.

If it's already installed on your wife's pc you can rip the key out with some software.

Why does OpenOffice require java now? Didn't there use to be a way to either install OpenOffice with java not included ? I thought so.

Sorry I hate java.
 
If you do not need the latest & greatest, pick up a 2003, 2002 or XP version off of eBay, etc.

Openoffice has ms compatibility down pretty well with the .doc format (2003 and below). It has trouble with .docx (2007), but so does every version of ms office prior to 2007. Most likely, openoffice would work for you, give it a try and if you run into problems, you can always buy msoffice later.
 
Ask Google or Yahoo where to find what you want they will give you a list of places I found WindowsXP Pro for $54
