I think that core 2 quad Q6600. You can check it out at eBay (http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Intel-Core-2-Quad-Q6600-2-4-GHz-Quad-Core-BX80562Q6600-Processor-/74070075). Before you purchase it you need to make sure if your motherboard works with core 2 quad CPU. If you have a good mobo, it should overclock very well. Personally I still use Core 2 Q9650 setup with GT9800 to run old games (which I buy at GOG.com) under Windows XP as a second system. I have a feeling that the older games run better with old setup than new setup.

His board is only listing the q9550 as the only supported quad core in the cpu support list.

IF it supports the q9550 it also supports something like the q8200...
but the list might be wrong, officially I think the 945GC only supports as high as FSB 266 and dual core CPUs,

I see. I checked out the company's site. It says that his mobo supports q9550. q9550 is not cheap. You had better make sure the compatibility with ASRock before you get it. Personally I wouldn't get q9550 for this mobo unless I can get it cheaply (less than $100).

yeah like kero said the q9550 is overpriced almost every where you look.I wouldnt pay more then $100 for a q9550

I think you would be better off building a new system with a Intel i3, amd trinity or phenom II x 4 965.

Yup, the motherboard's only listed compatible quad core is the Q9550, and it's too expensive. Save your money for the time being.

Which is weird considering that the other 45nm quads are identical besides clocks (q9650, q9450) and/or cache (q8200 and similar).

I had a bad upgrade experience, had a very cheap asus p35 board and it never performed stable with my q9550 (upgraded from an e2160) most likely because the power delivery circuitry wasn't able to deliver enough current.

For the cost of a q9550 you can get a trinity apu or "quad" am3 cpu or an i3 that will perform the same, add 100$ and you get a cheap motherboard and 4-8gb of ram.
With combo deals one could get a new platform for even less than 200$

Except... they're not identical. Different 45nm Core2Quad chips had different steppings. The Q9550 is an E0, I believe, whereas the Q8200 could be M0 or R0. Q9300 is R0 I think.

So it's not that surprising that they might only have compatibility with the Q9550, and not the lower quads.

Sell what you got and buy new. (Keep the gpu. Throw in something mediocre before selling.) Pretty much any DDR2 platform is not worth upgrading anymore. Not when an i3/DDR3 will outperform just about any DDR2 platform. Also note that you dont have to buy new either. Even first gen i5-7xx series are much faster than anything on LGA775.

though it says the only quad is the q9550 i see no reason why it wouldnt support something like the q6600 which can be had at like geeks.com for $90
