what is the best way to transfer files from 98 to xp

what is the best way to transter a couple hundreds office files from win 98 to a windows xp machine? i dont have a zip drive anymore. would it be to use a serial cable wwith windows file transfer. if i have a couple hundred files totalling about 40 mb how long would that take?
 
I would recommand you to get usb flash drive 2 or 4GB for less than 20 buck at your local walmart I bought sandisk 4GB for 11 buck on sale last month. With that you can use it with many documents and move around.

You can also store porn on it that you don't want to leave on the computer if multiple people use it.

flash drive wont work since i dont think it is supported in win 98. neither will gmail since i requires you to send each file individually right? also all of my cdrw's are serial ata. to do a peer to peer network you just need a crossover cable right? is it hard to set up?
 
Gmail has a 20mb attachment limit. zip the files, and send them in 2 or 3 emails. You may even get lucky, and they'll compress smaller than 20mb. I prefer 7Zip for compressing files.
 
win 98 SE (second edition) does support usb and all you have to do is install usb driver to work with win 98 se. google is your best friend and you can find something like win 98 usb driver google will give you some lists I have notebook with win 98 and it worked well for my usb flash drive

x2, it might be the easiest way depending on your current computer.

98/98SE had general USB support but it wasnt plug and play for flash drives, you will need the driver for that particular flash drive. the web site of the flash drive manufacturer may have a copy of the driver, but not all do, drivers for 98/98SE are getting rare. I know I needed the specific flash driver for each of my flash drives that Ive used with my 98/98SE computers. once its installed it will recognize it every time its plugged in after that.

for network transfer you can use a crossover cable between the 2 computers but offhand I forget how you set the network settings up for it (google can help you there though). might be easier to get a cheap router and just do a standard network setup. run the wizards and off you go.

serial cable: you will need a null modem adapter as well as the serial cable, just hooking the cable up serial port to serial port wont do it. the null modem adapter crosses the transmit and receive lines so they can talk to each other.

as long as the compressed file is under the 20MB size limit gmail imposes on attachments.
