What is the best way to master Microsoft Office 2007?

Hi there,

I have basic knowledge in Microsoft Office 2007 but for my new job I need to learn it much deeper. I have to be advanced user in Excel, Word and Outlook. I have searched for ways to learn it but eventually cut down to three solutions:
1. Buying books - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/book.aspx?ID=9470&locale=en-us
2. Going to seminar - http://truetrainings.com/wiki/Seminar:Microsoft_Office_2007 (notice, that this seminar is only $10 more than book but is it going to teach me something more than basics?)
3. Video training - there is a lot of free video tutorials but they are not organized properly. Also, I have found video training only fo excel but it is almost too expensive to me - http://www.amazingelearning.com/mic...-intermediate-and-advance-level/prod_170.html

So, my question woud be - what is the best fast way to learn advances Excel, Word and Outlook skills investing on courses about $100? Can anyone share his/her experience in this?

Thank you in advance 🙂

I think it would depend on how you learn fastest. If you have Office installed on your own machine, and you have the discipline to stick with the lessons, you can learn at your own pace and practice and repeat various steps at home without being concerned about falling behind the pace of a seminar.

On the other hand, seminars enforce a time schedule on you, and you can ask live instructors about issues when you have questions. Some people learn faster and/or better with that kind of extra push, but you pay for both the material and the personnel and resources necessary to conduct the seminar.

In any case, it depends on the quality of the course material. Since you don't like the organization of the video material you have found, rule that out unless you find other video courses you like better.

There are lots of books about learning Office. For the price of a good seminar, you could buy several well reviewed books. A lot of the effectiveness of a particular book depends on the writing and presentation style of the author. If one book doesn't explain a particular topic in a way you understand, you could cross reference to the same subject in another of the books, or you may find that the combined explations of two or more books helps you to understand what you could not get from one, alone.

I hope that helps. 🙂

I do best learning by doing. I wait until I need to do something, and then figure it out. Learn small tricks that make your job easier, and then build on that. If you study almost anything, you'll have 75% useless knowledge you won't need, and it clutters out the stuff you really need to know.

Thank you all for replies.

Harvey, after reading your post I have asked myself "how do I learn fastest? By reading books, listening to lecture or by watching videos?" Then I realized, the fastest way to learn is to read books and to practice a lot.

So I've decided to buy these books and I have spent only $53 🙂

To learn Outlook I think it will be enough to watch some tutorials on youtube and to read some post on forums.

What do you think about my decision?
