What is the best way to convert audio tapes to CD format?

Do I connect the miniplug from a walkman to the line-in of the sound card and run some software to record it, then burn it on a CD?

What software is the best to use?

How is the quality if anyone has done anything like that?

If this is the wrong forum, please kindly direct me to the expert.

Thanks in advance

I finally got a copy of TotalRecorder to record the sound from the mic input of the soundcard. Works great!
Thanks for all the suggestion. The software cost $12 only

lineout from the walkman, if it has it
line in on the sound card

soundforge or cooledit is what i'd use.

The headphone out can be used, but you will have to adjust the output level so that the soundcard input is not overdriven. (fuzzed out)

Could one use WMP to record? What about Nero? My GF asked me about this the other day. She has about a dozen cassettes she'd like to "turn into" CDs.

not a clue. Don't use WiMP and only use NERO for burning. But use SoundForge if you can get a copy. You can record and then edit the pops and hiss if you want. Equalize stuff out .. etc. Then you can encode the wavs for future use.

There are freeware programs that will record wav files and allow you to break them up into tracks, but lack the functionality that Cool Edit and Sound Forge have to manipulate those files.
