I have a sony digital video camera with a 1394 connection, a fast computer (800 mhz) and a reasonably large hard drive (40 gigs.) My computer came with some crappy (free) editing software that I wish to replace. What software would you recommend? Thanks for any help!

Adobe Premiere RT (Real time) is good. I've also heard that Vegas Video is good but I haven't seen it in action though. But do stay away from Ulead Media Studio Pro, for some reason I find it too slow for my liking.

in:sync Speed Razor is awesome but expensive and quite difficult
for a beginner since it's meant for professionals... however if
you find an older version somewhere cheaply I highly recommend it.
But do remember that it needs a dongle so be sure to get one if
you buy it used.

Adobe Premiere is a good alternative though.
