Probably V3 just because anything higher would be a waste with your CPU.

All modern video card's are now FULLY optimised for 3DNow!
A V3 will be peaked out with your system. More powerful video cards will not give much more improvement if any, except for 32bit. The V3 is limited to 16bit. Some 3d games now being released will only work if your 3d card supports 32bit. A V3 in those games means you must use software mode. I am in that situation now. Another factor to consider besides 32bit 3d is the future. As I said, the V3 is maxed out with your system. Keeping the V3, and upgrading to a 1Ghz system will not give you much of a performance boost, if any.

At least if you get a more modern 32bit card than the V3, you will have just as good 3d performance, be able to run 32bit games, and when you upgrade the CPU in the future, the video card should scale nicely, and you will see a huge performance boost. Plus, other compaines are still in business....

there are rumors that new Microsoft games and NHL2001 have come with only 32bit 3d accelerated support I think.
i think the guy should buy an MX. driver support is very good and why spend a lot on a K6III?

Sorry bluemax, but I thought it was common knowledge by now.
It is not a rumor, but indeed a fact. Tech support in MS newsgroups stated that this will not be fixed or addressed in any patches, and the V3 will only work in software mode.

Anyhow, here is a specific example taken from Microsoft's site:

<< No 3D Acceleration
This behavior occurs if you are using a video adapter based on the Voodoo 1, Voodoo 2, Voodoo 2 SLI, or Voodoo 3 video chipset. These display adapters can generate 32-bit color for desktop and DirectDraw programs, but they cannot generate 32-bit color displays for three-dimensional games, such as is required for Links 2001. Microsoft Links 2001 will not display 32-bit color with these cards, even when Hardware Acceleration is correctly selected in the game.
>>

This issue has cost me the sale of 2 3dfx 12 meg V2 cards.

Links. Well... some people do play that. ;)
I wonder what the big difference between hardware and software mode would be for that one...
Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.
