But back on topic, the best gaming card currently available is 9800Pro. If you are the type who only cares about frame rate at low res, then by all means, get the Flow FX Ultra (aka 5800 Ultra). Nevermind about the "turbine engine" cooling solutions, nevermind the excess heat, nevermind it's outrageous price tag.
The AIW 9800 looks pretty lame...
Why doesn't it use the Theater 310? They ought to have a more expensive version with an HDTV tuner and the Theater 310 chip.
Does it do hardware MPEG-2 decoding? I didn't read that it did anywhere. So basically it won't be supported by WindowsXP Media Center just like the AIW 9700.

They should stop stalling with these cheesy little incremental improvements and make some actual changes in the AIW department.

I use a Radeon 9700 TX from dell. I score 13,000 in 3D mark. DX 9 games, and intense 3D games run fine on the highest settings. You can fork over $500-600+ for the newest baddest thing out there but as far as visible performance, you're not gonna be much better then my $140 R9700 TX card right now. And I have money left over to take my girl to Veruka and Lot 61 for a little fun.
But by all means, if money is not object, knock yerself out man. Get a R9800 AIW. Just don't tell me your putting it into a athlon 1600 with 256mb ram or some crap or I'll vomit.
p.s. I am a new yorker too and I don't scare easily, especially from manhattanites, but if your from any projects in the BX then maybe I will shake a little...

Well the testing of the fx-5900 I would say answer this question. The 9800 pro is indeed a really find card. But Nvidia has taken it to the next level. I am sure however that the back and forth will continue. And this benefits gamers a great deal.

heh... I clicked on your link then saw SGi start to load up on the window title bar... closed it right away before I got envious. I haven't worked with an SGI box in a while but man those things are like tanks. I had one running a 3D render, Ripping 30 slides to an acetate printer, editing some layout, and running image editing, all in 4 different windows under UNIX, and this was in the days where a Pentium 90 was a top of the line consumer machine.
My friend works for Ford in their design lab. IIRC they were using either Sun or SGI setups that could work in live 3D full textured renders with 60+" LCD tablets. And that was a few years ago lol
FYI size of monitors usually doesn't affect video card performance IIRC. It's the resolution that monitor is set at. A 17" monitor set to 1600x1200 will be a helluva lot more demanding on a video card then even a 32" monitor at 800x600 resolution. Multiply the xxx by the xxx to figure out how many bits of information it needs to send to the monitor per frame. So 1600x1200 = 1,920,000 and 800x600 = 480,000. Big difference!

(btw my 1600+ still uses my Voodoo 4500. I got more performance longevity out of that card then any other PC computer part I've ever had. That thing should go on my mantle when I retire it
)is that right? I haven't been paying attention. I've been an ATI fan since my first computer. They've always made good boards and mac and PC compatible. That and the whole NV30 ordeal was quite ugly. I already have a R9800 so I'm not interested in the 5900 but Nvidia does have a few things I do want which ATI fails to support, the main thing being stereoscopic support. I saw how awesome 3D stereo glasses were on an Nvidia card with built in stereo support. When I bought them for my Radeon 9700 and 9800, it ran like total crap. Until ATI builds this support into their drivers, it is my only real complaint.
It's kinda sad that all these gamers don't realize how much cooler their gaming experience can be with a pair of $30-100 stereoscopic goggles. If they did they'd be banging ATI's door down for stereo drivers. (btw mine are edimensional's ED-3D. Awesome on an Nvidia card, absolute poop on an ATI card with no native stereo driver support)

yeah i agree, if you want to maximimize performance try something like a 9700 pro, 8rda+, 2500+, 512mb of ram
the 5900 and 9800 are pretty much neck and neck, however, i noticed that in the more current games and the doom 3 benchmarks the 5900 is ahead. Also, the retail 5900's only take up one slot and they arent loud at all. Add to it solid compatibility and pretty much bugfree drivers and you have a winner.
BUT, i would recommend you save your money and get a 9700. It's just smarter and you wont notice much of a difference really.

NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 ultra...it seems ATI still has a bit of driver issues....ppl still using 3.2 cats because 3.3 and 3.4 causes them problems but others it all works fine.....something isn't right about that.
