What is the best "time-proof" classic video card out there

Voodoo 2 hands down. Not only did Voodoo 2 SLI remain a viable choice for 3d gaming for a long time, but it remained the dominant choice for far longer than the 9700, 9800, Geforce 6xxx cards, GeForce 4xxx cards, or anything else.

Both 3dfx and Nvidia released several cards after the Voodoo 2 hit the scene but failed to produce anything that outperformed Voodoo 2 until much later . . . for 3dfx, it took the Voodoo 3 to outperform Voodoo 2 SLI (and even then, it took the better Voodoo 3 cards to accomplish that). For Nvidia, some of the TNT cards outperformed the Voodoo 2 SLI setups, as I recall, though not by all that much. In all fairness, we are talking about two standalone 3d adapters . . . moving from standalone 3d cards to integrated 2d/3d cards was a painful but necessary step for the industry.
 
The ATI Radeon 8500 and nVidia Ti4200 also did very well for a long time! Both are still able to keep up with games at low res and low quality. Both are still better than ALL integrated graphics except for the brand new Radeon X1250 integrated into the 600/690 chipset.
 
My Canopus Pure3d Voodoo card was the longest lasting video accelerator I've ever had.
Second longest lifespan was probably my Geforce DDR, Geforce 4 TI4200, or Radeon 9700 Pro.
Currently I've got an X1800xt, and I'll probably be upgrading in the summer or fall. (I like to game at 1920x1200 these days, and I can afford to throw a bit more money at my computer than I could a long time ago ... )
 
The Voodoo Cards were the beging of the first 3d efect, for games like doom and so on. they seemed to be what made games devoplep so much and they lasted a long time
 
Defintely the 9700/9800 Pro series..

They still work with HL2!! and source! amazing. it also was the forefront of the directx9 ..

i hope my 8800GTS will act the same 🙂
 
9700 Pro. I bought one to play Dark Age of Camelot, and it's now in my daughter's PC and she plays pretty much everything from Oblivion to Titan Quest on it. Awesome card when it comes to longevity, you couldn't ask for a more solid piece of hardware that has withstood the test of time.
 
I needed a cheap PCIE video card so I picked up a GeForce 7100GS. Even though it's a low end card, I assumed it would at least match my old 9700 Pro given it was released around 4 years later. Nope, 9700 Pro owns it. I was kinda of disappointed actually considering Moore's Law and all.
