What is the best thermal grease/compound available?

Somehow whenever I ask this question I always get different responses.

AS5, Ceramique, MX-1, seem to be common answers. Benchmarks don't show to be much a difference, but still, I just want to see people's experiences with their thermal grease and what they think the best is.

There is only a degree or two between the top ten so I choose ease of use and cost - ceramique takes the cake on that score. $5. and shipped free from several online resellers - hard to beat.

Use the search function for this Forum and General Hardware.
Search the archieves too. Much will come up. In-joy! 😀
Note: Application, air flow and sink&heat spreader flatness are the biggies.

Dittos G-Y. The flatness of your heatsink mating surface will make a LOT more difference than the goop you use.

All depends, I suppose, but I've been using Scythe MX-1 lately, and I'm getting rather partial to it.

MX-1 takes a little getting used to -- kind of reminds me of dried-up toothpaste, but once you get used to spreading it, it works great.

Personally, I like to use very little grease on components, but that's impossible with MX-1, so I don't know if I'll hang with it, or not, but we'll see... 😉

I use Ceramique and AS5. They are both top-notch although Ceramique can handle -70 C (that's a big thing for me) while AS5 is a little easier to apply.

From what I can gather, Shin Etsu G751 is supposed to be the one of the best out there, but from what I've read it's a Bitch to spread it.

scratch that.
This is supposed to be the best stuff out there, but you can't use it with aluminum and it's also very conductive.

AS5 and Ceramique seem to be the two most popular. I would say go with best pricing you can get of the two. I dont think you can go wrong with either.

Yes, Shin Etsu makes excellent goops, but the one mentioned above is very difficult to apply - has the consistency of dry modeling clay (most commonly found here marketed as Coolermaster PK001). They have some newer ones that are easier to handle but they are hard to find here - several are marketed by Coolermaster in their PK series. You can usually find a good selection of Shin Etsu goops and pads on eBay. Their pads are also marketed under the Akasa name.

I just started building my first rig and the AS5 has worked great. It wasn't too hard to spread which is great if you don't know what you're doing 😉

Vin,
$4. shipped - svc.com is also $4. shipped or free with a $25. order...
Um... Sorry, Zepper, but...

If you hold free shipping in such high regard, why do you charge buyers for shipping the items in your sig? It would seem, on principle, that you believe the seller should bear the cost.

This baffles me... 😎

Pretty much what everyone else has stated but.... The best performers are Shin etsu and AS MX-1. However both of those are a little harder to spread if that makes a difference. Ceramique and AS5 are both great as well and easier to spread. A tad cheaper as well. Hope that helps. If you want the lowest possible temps, get MX-1.

as I stated before the lowest temp are obtained with this:
