Hi,
I am running a really old yet reliable Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware. I think they are up to revision ten billion or something and mine is like 1.1. I want a new router that also supports third party firmware but has improvements over my current router, such is Wireless N.

What's the best current bang for your buck router that fits this description. Keywords: bang for your buck. I don't want to spend $200 on a swanky Belkin.

Hmm... good luck..

I'd stick with a DD-WRT router. I have a WRT54GL, and no plans to move to anything else anytime soon.

Are there any routers that do 802.11n and support DD-WRT?

Is 802.11n actually finalized yet? :)

You swapping a lot of big files over a network?

Otherwise G should be fine. I haven't really dug into DD-WRT. I use Tomato and it works great. Have a v4 WRT54G. Have the trasmit power upped to 70. Channel 11. Wifi works great through the house for my ISP.

I just bought two wrt54g 32mb versions that I posted in Hot deals. That's my version of upgrade.. I have the wrt54g v 2 (haven't checked to see if it's the 32mb version and have no desire to either). But hoping the 32mb increase helps with torrents so we will see!

I'm totally happy with the DDWRT and I've even played around with Tomato. Either 3rd party does the job.

V2 has 16mb.

I have a V4? I think with Tomato and a V5 which I had to use DD-WRT Micro because they took half the memory from V5 and up and only DD-WRT Micro works. However I plan to use it as a repeater so it should work just fine.

wrt600n is a nice - but only has 64mb of ram - if possible locate a 128meg model.

or better yet - use a old pc to route and use the route as an access point. 99% of instability is caused by the route/firewall/etc being loaded on a router that has insufficient resources for heavy loads.

separating access point and route and switch will make things work a bit better

Same as 1.1 with a CPU upgrade and greater wireless transmitter integration (fewer transmitter parts). Some of these have 32 MB of RAM but are locked to 16 MB in the firmware (can be unlocked to use all RAM — see [1]

While you typed it does have 16mb's some of the V2's have 32mb's in them but I have to open the the case up and look inside. Then if it does have the correct chips inside I can type in a few lines into the command prompt area in the router and upgrade it to 32megs. Or I can skip all this and just install the 32mb routers I got for 18shipped each.
