I know that for CRT the higher you go, the better, but I was wondering what the best refresh rate for a lcd moniter is.

crt's are the way to go for gaming no doubt. lcd is pointless maybe it might be thin and save space but you are wasting lots of money for it. when you could of just got a crt had a better monitor good refresh rate.i dont see why people would want lcd's?i cant see one thing a crt in performance is worse

16ms and below.

Newer LCD's like the Dell 21'" are very well suited to gaming.

Cheaper ones are not.

Good quality CRT monitors (Trinitron) are brighter though but that is slowely changing.

A cheap CRT monitor with shadowmasking would be worse then a goof LCD with sub 16ms rates.

Response rate is measured in milliseconds, I think that is what you are refuring to. Lower is generally better for people that want the screen to respond to fast frame rate changes - such as playing games. Note though, there is no standard way to rate response rate. Some manufactures claim the lowest possible rate while others claim a more realistic average rate. Let the buyer beware.

As to the original question, most LCDs have a native resolution and refresh rate, for the most part you will want to run the monitor there. For example, 17" LCD's usually run at 1280x1024 @ 60 hz. Running lower lower resolutions than that will cause blury text.

Good luck.

Uh you guys are getting response time and refresh rate mixed up. Refresh rate is how many frames per second the video card sends to the monitor. However, it's generally pointless to set it higher than 60hz on an lcd because it can't render more fps than that anyway becuase the response time is to slow.

Thats easy. Ever lugged a 21 inch CRT around???

Few people need top of the line prformance but actually being able to lift your monitor helps a ton. LOL.

I have a great Viewsonic CRT and a cheap LCD and the lcd is brighter and actually fits on a desk shelf without hanging off the edge or beating up the wall.

Also my 17 inch LCD has essentially the same screen size as my 19 inch CRT.

I wont buy another CRT unless its the cheapo 14 inch variety for the garage pc lab.

I just got the Samsung 712N today with a reported 12ms response time. I posted a request for comments for it but nobody replied. It was a great price at BB so I had to bite.
I'm still using my 175v though.
