Hi.🙂
What is the best program to defrag XP pro
I'm using Norton systemWorks 2002
But I want to know whats is the best out there
Thank You
🙂

i like diskkeeper a lot! it works a hell faster than norton without all the crap that norton gives you to slow down your computer.. try it out.. i've had good expereince with disk keeper

I have used Norton Speed Disk for a long time through many versions of Windows.

I upgraded to Windows XP and installed Systemworks 2002. It just doesn't work the way it should. It defrags and leaves lots of fragmented files and unconsolidated files. It is also annoying that SystemWorks for XP leaves out a number of utilities that came with the Windows ME version. For example, it is missing the Norton registry editor that could do a search & replace in Windows ME.

I have tried the trial version of DiskKeeper. It seems to work better and can run in the background. The disk map that it shows does show a lot of scattered and unconsolidated space. I think that it is better than Smart Drive. It certainly is much more expensive. It is $50 for just the defrag utility. The entire Norton Utilities package is less expensive.

I used to use Diskeeper but decided to give O&O Defrag a try.

Seems to do a better job than Diskeeper, and has a lot more options for what kind of defrag you can do.

did anyone give o&o defrag give a try and give a report ? 🙂 It *looks* good !

Btw. i am running FAT32 filesystem under WinXP Pro....and i dont like ANY defragger (including standard XP Pro, Diskeeper, Norton 2k2 speedisk) running it UNDER XP Pro. They are extremely slow...and Norton speedisk does offer far LESS options then eg. it does under 98/SE. Funny..the filesystem is the same, tho !

These defraggers are about 10x (!) slower (on the SAME filesystem) as under 98/SE. (I can access my XP partition from 98/SE and vice versa...dual boot). I use the same version of norton speedisk under XP or 98.

The fastest and BEST defrag i get using Norton speedisk (with all its options) from within 98...and defragging my XP partition. It defrags pagefile.sys and everything..usually it would put pagefile.sys at the beginning of my first partition (where i have XP).

Yesterday i changed it so it puts the pagefile.sys at the END of my XP partition. (So it's between my system in front and my appz on the next partition, D: - instead of the pagefile at the beginning. Might get lesser seeks this way.

Anyway...i do not recommend ANY defragger running under XP defragging fat32...i dont know about NTFS...but i was very disappointed by diskeeper 7. I also dont know about O&O defrag.

(Btw. running XP Pro...bottime according to bootvis from "switch PC on" to "desktop accesible" is 14.5 seconds. My measured boottime from the bootmanager menu [bootitNG] to the XP Pro login screen is 9.5 secs.)

With XP Pro I'm using DisKeeper 7.0 It rocks! Try their thirty day trial version and you'll be sold on it, too.

Shouldn't your page file be on the outermost or one of the first files on your hard drive for faster access? Norton and Disk keeper do this by default I do believe.

diskeeper7.0 put it at the end after i tried out the "boot time defrag" feature. The other progs usually put it all in front.

If you think that my most apps usually are on D:, behind the C: drive, it makes sense...meaning while running games/apps it doesnt have to access the pagefile far on the beginning of the hd....but rather at the end of the C: partition (shortly before my D: partition starts). The pagefile is not on the end of the *HD* (theres my storage partition 🙂

Looks like this

data = !!!
empty = ...

[ C: !!!!!!!!!!.......................pagefile ] [ D: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........................] [E:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...........] [F:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........]

(F: is my second OS, 98 on the slowest partition at the end of the HD which i left for compatibility purposes 🙂

If the pagefile would be all at the beginning, the hd would have to seek all the way thru C: while running apps off D:. This way.....it's still on a fast partition...but not that "far away".
Norton speedisk under 98/se has the advantage it has all the options you can configure manually...where to put files etc.

I dont have the nerves to wait like 10 times longer for diskeeper doing the same job...it took an eternity just for one partition (5 gig C:, this is not even much)
