Also, unless you've got some extreme cooling or are lucky, you won't get a very good performance boost like the AMD systems get from OC'ing.

ok,,forget OC,, Just the best most reasonable setup for a pentium, More towards video editing than gaming, I just have no idea which mobo to pic, there's so many, and all the processors with the 540 530, 630, i don't see the difference, and whether to go ddr 2, or not. PCIe is definit though. THX, Plz comment

Things to consider:
Need 64-bit?
Need a system right now?

Based on your budget, I would go with a 6XX series cpu if you need a system now. I have a 640 and reach 4ghz on stock voltage. Everyone that has a 6XX has been happy with their oc'ing results. If you can wait a couple of months, the dual cores will be coming out with several new chip sets.

An Intel 640, Asus P5AD2-E Premium motherboard and 1 gig of RAM (OCZ PC2-4200 EB Rev2 or Patriot PC2-5600 XBLK) will set you back around $750-800 alone. A good video card, x800xl or 6800gt will set you back another $300-400. That leaves you with several hundred for optical/hard drives, case and psu.

Nope. I'm still at stock voltage of 1.4v. With a XP-120, I'm at 47c degrees at load. If you check out ocforum.com, you'll find a lot of folks with Intel 6XX setups.

If you wait for the dual core PD's then you woul dbenefit.
One of the things which dual core helps most seems to be video encoding.
Dual core's will also be nicely priced. But there will be a wait, so it depend show urgently you need a new system.

Sounds like you need better cooling..I was having that problem with my 3.4ghz chip, until I went to water cooling. Even at default speeds it was throttling..download throttle watch and see the results you are getting while overclocked..the higher my OC, the more it was throttling, and the worse the performance..after I got it cooled well, things went the way they should, increase in clockspeed = increase in performance again.

Yeah, you had insufficient cooling and your processor was throttling. You should try a better cooling solution if you intend a high o/c.
