What is the best PC gaming monitor?

I can second this. 2560x1600 is a huge jump from 1920x1200, totally worth the money. Even on FPS type games the response time is excellent unless you're really picky on that, in which case I'd recommend a CRT.

I say even the crappiest 30' monitor is better than the best 24' and smaller monitors and its not even close. 25x16 easily trumps any edges the smaller monitors may have in the way of response time or whatever. Once you play on a nice 30' display you'll never want to go back.

Once you buy NEC pro series you'll never buy anything else. I'd start with LCD2490WUXi2 - if you have old eyes then LCD2690WUXi2.

Agreed, I recommend stepping outside of the consumer/big box store models and looking into something a little nicer. I hope financial constraints never has me going back to Dell, HP, etc... After buying and returning 5 LCDs, I finally ended up with an EIZO. I lucked up and got this one as a refurb, and it turned out to be in perfect condition. Had this LCD not worked out for I would have gotten the NEC LCD2490WUXi, but this EIZO finally put an end to my search for a top quality LCD. My only regret is that they no longer had any SX2761's available.

The problem is that everyone has a different idea of "better". Clearly yours includes "bigger".

I personally have never likes the way LCDs - even the best LCDs look. I don't like the input/image processing lag and the panels that have better colors seem to have more ghosting.

I would love to get a large LCD but I am really afraid it would frustrate me and I would hate it. I will probably inflict one on a family member first and see how it goes.

I love my 17" Trinitron that does 1024x768@240hz, and I would definitely prefer it over my 22" 2233rz of 1680x1050@120hz if gaming was the only thing I did.

Which model can hit 240hz?

I currently have the 24in Sony fwb-900. It was only $150 used on craigs list.

240hz is ridiculous on a CRT or an LCD.

On a CRT, as you increase the refresh rate, you lose sharpness - that is the trade off.

On an LCD, it might be even worse. This article is about the problems with 120/240hz using video sources which have a fixed number of frames. Video games have a lot more frames but my guess is that the image processors cannot keep up with your video card beyond 80-100 fps and you will probably experience some image problems. I don't know this for certain, but it is something to consider and look for:

I did see one of those sony 24" CRTs on craigslist a few months ago - was very tempted to get it, but it seemed too risky.

Bigger isn't better, but more pixels certainly is. If your still holding on to an old CRT, at some point you have to let go. I kept my old 22in CRT as long as I could. Because like you I didnt like the Image quality of LCDs. But I wouldn't want a 30 inch CRT monitor even if they were available. Have you seen the size of a 30 in tube? Massive doesn't even begin to describe it. LCDs lose to CRTs in a lot of areas as far as image quality. But they have improved in those areas every generation. They also consumer less power, produce less heat, take up less space, are brighter, have no geometry distortion towards the sides/corners, have larger viewable screen size, dont have issues with burn in, better sharpness, no screen glare. I also find LCDs much less fatiguing on the eyes.

I agree completely. The CRT I have is in very good shape, but at best has maybe 2-3 years left in it. I am not buying any more, but I would not mind waiting through another few generations of improvement and price reductions before I am forced to switch.

son it doesn't work the same way with LCD vs CRT...

The differences are understood, son. As the owner of an lcd, as well as a 24 inch Sony FW-900 widescreen crt that can reach 160hz, I am not cutting my teeth with regards to refresh rates between the two formats.

Ben90 mentioned he had a crt that could reach 240hz. I am asking simply which model it is.

From the little bit I've researched, the DELL UltraSharp 2410 sounds like a better monitor than the NEC 2490WUXi and less than half the price. But, I'm kinda asking if that's true. I think the NEC may be an older design. ??

No monitors are avail like the old IBM T221... and it's sad.

Hey AdamK47, that looks clean, but I bet it would be hella uncomfortable to use.
