Hi all,

I'm looking for the best free newgroup reader. Ease of use is a plus.

I haven't touched newsgroups' readers for a long time, but last time i did, GrabIt was highly recommended for downloading, anyway.

News reader or binary downloader?

Just to read newsgroup I like Forte Agent but for binaries download I prefer Newsbin Pro.

The best one that I've used so far is News Leecher. Great application. Very low memory consumption compared to some of the programs out there. Easy to use and easy to understand.

Newsleecher is by far the easiest to use and very powerful.
I converted to Newsleecher after using Agent for a long time.

I use Thunderbird's newsgroup reader even when I'm reading the Microsoft Beta newsgroups. :D

I haven't tried any of the newsgroup readers mentioned here. I use Outlook Express for some newsgroup reading.

Agent is pretty much antiquated. I bought their 2.0 release early last year and they've done nothing since despite their promises. I'm fed up with Forte.

Buncha newsreaders out there.....Dialog, XanaNews, Newsrover, Xnews (maybe the most popular given all the NG references I've seen), Gravity (still out there despite Microplanet no longer supporting it...or no longer around?????), Outlook (yes it does NG reading), and what I use, Thunderbird. There's even more out there and what is best is up to you.

I love the ultra small NewsPro.

It's under a meg in size, comes with a free 30-day trial, and all updates are free. One guy makes it and keeps adding things, as well as takes suggestions. Supports server-side searching, grouping of newsgroups, etc.

oops, I see you're looking for a free one. But if you're going to be dealing with binaries then the $29 is well spent on Newsleecher.

Newsleecher is the best one out there, downloads fast due to multiple connections & can use nzb file to make downloading easier. Forte Agent is good, but is slower and lacks the nzb file support. I would have to say to use Newleecher for speed & ease of use

Depending on what you want to use newsreader for. If you plan to download binaries ONLY, nothing beats the free powergrab. If you want download and also the convenience of reading texts, Xnews is best but Xnews is pretty intimidating to people who likes to be intimidated. It's not that hard to learn using it. In addition to that, Xnews hogs memory a lot and prone to crash. As long as you are aware of these issues and knows the trick to stay away from problems, Xnews is pretty OK to use but still not the best out there. These 2 are free, no trial no shareware, no nothing.

After reading the comments above about newsleecher, I downloaded the trial version of newsleecher to try out. I just un-installed it after 2 days of trial The problem is it does not have the text reader capability convenient for user. Other than that and the stupid count down at the start of the trial program (I probably would use more than 2 days to learn more if it's not for that annoying count down), it's pretty good program, nice user-interface. Until they have the text reader capability, I won't pay a dime just to have another nicer program. I want one to replace both Powergrab and Xnews, not to get another pair ie. newsleecher and thunderbirds or something similar in purpose.

newsbin 4 (5 is mostly clunky, still unsure whether the new version spool loading is worth the switch)
