what is the best Network Router?

what is the best Network Router out there?

i wanna share my DSL connection, so u need sth fast and soild.

also i need ot to have PPPoE support.

PS: is there some limit to router, like i can receive file or host game on line?

There is the Netgear RT314 router with a built in 4 port 10/100 switch. This router supports PPoE. This router also supports NAT, which should allow you to play games online even behind the router, or at least most of them.

I've got the LinkSys BEFSR41--equivalent to the Netgear mentioned above. Chose LinkSys bcs Amazon had it for cheaper ($142) than I could get Netgear. It also supports PPPoE and provides you NAT. (I don't need the PPPoE--yet, anyway.) Couldn't say if one's better than the other, but despite some of the horrow stories I'd read about it on NGs and Amazon reviews, it worked pretty much great outta da box. I *did* upgrade the firmware before I even connected the cable modem, however.

Liksys BEFSR41 is another good router. It's not the best router, but from now until the end of the year you can purchase it for around a 100 dollars. It's got pretty much the same features as the 4 port Netgear but should perform a little better. Oh, and it takes about a minute to set up.

Sorry, forgot your final question...
The limits on the router are you can forward 10 selected IP port ranges to specific machines in your home net. I've heard some online games require this to work, which can take a little digging. As for files, my son reports no problems with Napster, et al. In theory you could also run a web server/FTP server on your home net, but my cable ISP seems to block this--for obvious reasons.
Of course there are software solutions with more power and flexibility, but I think the speparate router probably results in fewer headaches.

314 is OEMed to Netgear by Zyxel. Go with original Zyxel 314 .
The only difference is that Zyxel 314 has uplink port while Netgear 314 doesnt.
Otherwise both are identical. BTW firmware updates are released for Zyxel first.

My router of choice, I have tried a few, is an old box running freesco from a floppy. More features in it then any of the lower brand routers and cheap to buil too.
