An optical mouse doesn't need a mousepad, so long as your using it on a flat surface that isn't reflective. I use a mousepad, but only because gliding on the pad feels better than gliding on my wooden desk. Oh yes, my mousepad is one of those $1 pads from compusa.

I believe I've read you can get marginally more accurate tracking if you avoid a solid-colour mousepad - something speckled or an otherwise varying surface allows the sensor to more easily discern movement. Or is this one of those myths?

I use my optical on a normal mousepad...It has no difficulty with the design printed on it.

<< smoother than any mouse pad >>

i both agree and disagree. the ultimate mousepad is the everglide and/or ratpad. if your desk isn't as smooth as a baby's bottom, then get an everglide or ratpad. Everglide Ratpadz

u can buy the everglide cheaper from this place, but they only have one model. i bought it from here, cuz it's all ya need: Get Everglide

In my experience it doesnt matter at all, you don't even need to bother with a mouse pad if you don't want.
Some optical mice have problems with white mouse pads though, and a reflective surface but be difficult for it.

pretty much any mousepad will do.
however I'd recommend an everglide or ratzpad like Quad said.
When you're gaming, you want precise movements with a little friction in the pad.
The tracking doesn't matter since its optical, but you want the mouse to move smoothly and accurately. I don't think any desk can produce the friction you need...plus you gotta keep it clean. These two pads don't slide around on the desk like an ordinary pad or mat will, and they provide a good amount of friction.

Good luck.
