Ive got the intellimouse explorer optical from microsoft. You can get them for about 30$ now. I love it for games! Very smooth and precise. But I was upgrading from a basic microsoft wheelmouse, so I dont have that much to compair.

I got a Logitech firstmouse+ for under $15 at Best Buy quite some time ago and it works great. One of my favorite mice I ever had was a Logitech Mouseman circa early-1990's because it was wider but of course it didn't have a wheel. Why in the world would you (or anyone) want a USB mouse? They are more expensive and have less OS support.

He did say not optical....
Microsoft mice are nice, but I personally like a good trackball.

let's see, USB takes like almost no processor usage while ps/2 on the other hand takes about 16% when scrolling. You do the math.

I must admit I never heard USB mice have less processor usage when scrolling. 16%?!? Is there proof of that somewhere? Really, I'm interested in reading about that.

I still think I'll pick PS2 or serial for compatibility though. Does your USB mouse ship with MSDOS or win31 drivers, because I don't think the standard old drivers would see it? BeOS? And my preference is Linux which, well, probably still isn't very good with USB...although I haven't tried because I have always avoided USB.

As far as CPU usage, I think this is alot less of a difference than all those dumbfscks using winmodems. And SCSI (hope to have soon) would make the biggest difference.

Wireless mice are the only way to fly. If you buy through the net and score some coupons, you should be in good shape. My logitech wireless is TOO COOL. I don't drag the line, use it from my bed, it's just way too convenient.

KnightBreed- You are totally wrong! Do the test yourself. Take a regular usb mouse and get a usb to to ps/2 convertor. Now go to your start menu, accesories, system tools, system monitor. Now Try scrolling and see how hihg the cpu processor usage jumps when on ps/2 and then compare to usb. The difference is pretty enourmous. Do your own testing before blabbing on some bs that you probably have not tested yourself or else you would not be saying that!

I get less CPU usage using the scroll wheel than I do when I use the scroll bar. I think the difference is probably nill anyway.

I advise the Logitech Optical for 30 bucks. I know three people with them and they have all been working fine, but on the other hand I know 4 people with Intellimouse Opticals that each had their mouse die on them within 6 months

While I seriously doubt that PS/2 uses more system resources than USB, there are some definite reasons why I choose PS/2:

1) Higher refresh rates. I went from PS/2 to USB and now back to PS/2. I'd forgotten how wonderful a 200 hz mouse rate was. 125 just doesn't cut it.

2) No "freezing." For those of you on USB mice... Does your mouse freeze occasionally when a program first starts? PS/2 never does that to me, while USB did. Same system, same OS install, only thing changed is the mouse.

3) Compatibility. Ever had to boot into safe mode while using a USB mouse? Bet you had fun using keyboard shortcuts again. How about alternative OS's? Ever tried to install Linux with a USB mouse?

USB is great for other things (scanners, printers, etc) but for keyboard & mouse I'll stick to PS/2, thank you.

Get a Logitech mouseman wheel optical from buy.com with a $10 coupon.

I upgraded from the Logitech mouseman wheel+ and I love it :D

Much smoother I got the 2nd gen mouse which has a higher refresh rate. Have not had one single problem with the mouse being unresponsive and no lifting problems either. I play mainly fps like Q3 RA3 which requires a lot of wrist flicking.

Gotta loose the \ from end of his link. Even then you still won't read it :)

Does that glow from underneath like those neon ground effects on cars?

Interesting.

Personally, I like the microsoft wheel mouse basic.
They, are cheap, reliable and comfortable no matter if you are left or right handed.
You can crank up the refresh rate with ps2rate also.

I'm with glp1del and those folks, I got mine for $45 canadian which is ~$30US the Logitech Mouse Wheel Optical kicks arse. It's got logitech reliability and it's PS/2 or USB (why someone would want a USB mouse is well beyond me (See Viper's post)) but if you want USB it's there...

And Optical is great for games....just don't lift the mouse up.
I've been using my Logitech Optical for 3 months now, the only time it chockes in games is if I lift it off the mouse pad. Other than that they rock for games.
