I would echo Dreamweaver 4 . . . but for some people M$ Frontpage 2002 is excellent. The basic response, however, is . . . the best HTML editor is the one that you are most knowledgeable about and can handle easily. Example . . . most of my editing of HTML is in Notepad!
*rofl* I was waiting on someone to say notepad! Go to EVR Soft and download 1st page 2000. Its alot like Homesite and its free. If you weant industrial strength, go for Dreamweaver.
GoLive 5.0 is superior to Dreamweaver 4. Though, it's not really based on the content they put out; that is essentially equal. Adobe products are generally more sleek, in my opinion. BMW (Adobe) and Mercedes (Macromedia). A BMW lets you feel connected to the road. A Mercedes gives you a smooth ride.
All good suggestions . . . but . . . an editor is normally a program used to review and make changes in exisiting HTML content. Most of the responses deal with CREATING web pages. And in that vein, most web authoring tools can edit HTML programming, but sometimes that is using a baseball bat when a toothpick will do.
1st Page from EVR Soft seems as a good choice. It free and tons of features. I like HomeSite as well, but it's not free. MS FrontPage sucks (have FP '98 and FP '2000; while I like other MS software, FP line is exception).
Is 1st Page really better than Homesite, or is it just that it's free? My company pays for the license, so price isn't really an issue, but if 1st Page has features that Homesite doesn't, I'd be willing to switch.
if youre talking about a pure HTML editor, i say HTML Kit for Windows machines. its freeware and its updated really often. on Macs, BBEdit is my choice.
