What is the best HSF for 3500+ Winnie on msi k8n neo2 when OCed?

Hello,

I am looking to OC my CPU to around 2.6Ghz or maybe hit 2.7Ghz, (with FSB at 250Mhz with 11x multi and 4xHTT) is this possible with air cooling?? (Look at my sig for pc specs).

I would like to know which would be the best HSF to get with a MSI k8n neo2, so that I maybe able to hit these numbers (I do not really want to fit a water cooling kit to hit these numbers, as I think that air cooling will be able to do this, at a lower cost).

At the mo I am using the stock HSF which i have not yet tried to overclock, the standard HSF is ok but i would like to upgrade the HSF to either the Coolermaster Hyper6 or Thermalright XP90, as i think these are probably the best out there at the mo for my mobo (I have found out that the xp120 does not fit :( otherwise i would have gone with that)... basically i would just like some input on to what would be the best HSF to buy to be able to reach this kind of OC, and also what would be the best thermal compound to use (to my knowledge it is artic ice 5 but i maybe wrong :S).

Also i would like to know is there any other fans that you guys would recommend that would have sufficient CFM for this type of OC, but would also have a fairly low dB rating. Bearing in mind that performance is a key factor so I would consider a louder fan to reach 2.6GHz or maybe 2.7 if possible.

Many thanks in advance, :)

The xp90 and xp120 are the best heatsinks available, so get the xp90, cause its the only one which will fit on your comp.

For thermal compound, the best stuff is arctic silver 5 (as5).

I don't know much about fans, but the thermalright recomended is the one i'd get, is it to loud for you?

I think the recommended one is quite good, i was looking at the vantec tornado 92mm, this is a beast at CFM, (119) but i have heard some good things and bad things about this and it is very loud so this would be a no for me, but the fan that is recommended with the Thermalright sounds quite good ..(lol i didn?t even think of checking out their site to see what was recommended) this is 48 CFM which is quite good and the dba is low aswell at 30 as apposed to 56 on the vantec. so i think i might go with that and see what i can get.

Actually I'm using the XP-120 on that same mobo right now. It's a tight fit but it will work. If you want to use the ram in slots 1 & 2 then you have to install the ram before you put the heatsink on. This is kind of a pain and I recommend you put the heatsink on before you put the mobo in the case. This allows a lot more access.

I use a 120mm fan rated at 105 cfm and its not loud at all. I believe it's rated at 34db. My system idles at ~32C and loads at ~47C with the fan running at 40% and vcore at 1.47 according to SpeedFan.

Hope that helps.

If i was able to fit the xp120 that would be great, because then you get the best of both worlds high CFM and low dba, that would be my ideal choice if it would work, what about all of the capacitors etc do they not get in the way?

Also i can see by your sig that you are currently clocked at 2.5Ghz, have you tried to get it any higher? or do you know if there would be a possibility to get to 2.6/2.7Ghz speeds on that setup? Bearing in mind that i have bought good ram so they should be able to hit 250Mhz fsb (for the use of the 11x multi).

i am on a mission to get "250Mhz fsb, 4xHTT (1000Mhz HTT), and 2.750Ghz CAN IT BE DONE.. i hope so, any input? :)

I've actually gotten up to 2.64GHz and it runs games all day long. I need to mess around with settings though so I can get it completely Prime stable.

There is one capacitor that gets very close to the heatpipe but you don't need to move it if you're careful.

My 3000+, right now is at FSB260, HT 4X, muti. 9, so yours should be possible, try it out, and post your result here.

Elfear I run mine at 2.62ghz all day every day, and I use an XP90. With an XP120 I'm sure you can run 2.64 all the time.

It's great to hear that the XP120 fits, but too bad I already spent 40 bucks on the XP90 :(

Leosliu I run my 3500+ at 275FSB, HT 3x, multi 9.5 which gives me approx. 2.612ghz, my ram is set to 1:1, 3-4-4-10 1T, PC4600.

HOWEVER, I highly doubt you'll hit 2.75 on air. I can easily hit 2.6 at like 1.48v, but I'd need like 1.65+ to even get 2.7ghz. And with that kind of voltage I'm getting load temps in the mid 50s, which is uncomfortably high.
