I am building a new PC for a friend and need to know what is the current best deal for cooling a 1ghz T-Bird.

They won't be overclocking, and it would be nice if it didn't sound like a 747.... :)

So a Taisol maybe ?

What about the SVC ones ?

Thx for your input....

I always buy Alphas for my personal machines. I recommend an Alpha PAL6035, it's only $25 at 2cooltek.com with a Sunon fan. Not a superior performer like the PAL8045, but still decent. Kept my bro's 1.2gHz @ 1.2gHz @ 32-34*C idle.

I'm with Flowerman, Alphas are still very good. Alternatively, the Taisol 742092 will do a good job, too. KDComputers has 'em for ~$20+ shipping.

Among the really inexpensive coolers, Coolermasters are arguably the best. www.puicorp.com has the dp5-6131c for $9+shipping. Amd uses coolermasters in their retail kits, but I'd go with the Taisol or the Alpha....

Those alpha's sound nice..but do we have to worry about *lapping*?? I don't expect to be overclocking soon..but eventually I may....and have heard a lot about lapping....but really don't want to do it.

do the alpha's require it or are do they have a good "stock" surface?

Alphas have a mirror finnish so you wont have to lap it. I'd have to say the Alpha PAL6035 is the best cooler for your price range as well. I've got one and it keeps my T-Bird cool.

no heatsink needs to be lapped. I dont even consider it a really good idea, because it requires a lot of time/effort, and I have yet to see lappage decrease temps by more than 2 degrees. Besides, the Alpha's surface is very smooth.

Still using my Alpha 6035 to cool my 1.33 ghz overclocked Tbird... it shouldn't have problem cooling the Athlon XPs since the XPs runs cooler.

That's the fun part! :D

Lapping can help lower your temps, but I mainly do it for fun. Can't hurt to lap it. Alpha's finish is usually very good, with only light machining swirls. Much better than the radial crap that is stock on those Tt orb HSFs :)

I was very suprised at my SK6's finish. I've got several small dins and scratchs. I'll be breakin out the sand paper tomorrow night.
