What is the best heatsink for an athlon
and where is the cheapest place to get it?
I just ordered a 1.33 gig athlon and an asus A7A266.
Is there any kind of space limitations on this mobo?
I dont want to buy an expensive heatsink and find out it doesnt fit on my mother board;)

I also ordered the mushkin 256meg ddr module on special for 99 bucks and free shipping.
I hope this stuff is good;)

I am suprised that noone mentioned that the MC462A won't fit in his mobo due to the capacitors near the socket.

<< Warning: Some motherboards, while in full compliance with AMD specifications, do feature capacitors that are taller than the clearance provided by these notches. In these instances, it is not possible to install the MC462 in its current design. Below is a list of known incompatible boards, which will be updated as we go: ........

Known incompatibilities (as of June 1st, 2001): Asus A7A266, Gygabyte GA-7DX, Tyan Trinity KTA, FIC AZ11E

So there goes this option.

So now you should consider the Millenium Glacitor for about 40$ and the Taisol 760 for about 35-39$.

I would personnally wait for more reviews about the Glaciator. If it's as good as it should then go for it. If no grab the Taisol.

It doesn't look like you can change the fan on the Glaciator. Am I wrong? If not, it might not be for someone looking for the quietest fan.

Didn't the Rev. 1 of the switech fix the capacitor problems? Or was that only on some boards. I know they chopped off the bottom corners of the base plate to allow for the capacitors on some boards.

WOW...Thanks a lot WhiteWolf. I would have bought that assembly and thenwhen I got it I would have eargerly opened anticipating some serious overclocking ...only to find out it doesn't fit!
anyway the Glaciater looks kewl... I can't imagine how its going to look in one of the flamed out cases with a window in the side of it!
one question though, won't a copper heatsink turn green from oxidation eventually?

maybe they should make a thread locked at the top for this type of question?
I've seen this post so many times. In the end, the "Swiftech" replies dominate the thread.

you guys are gonna smack me for saying this, but the best price/performance HSF is ThermalTake Volcano II. Really, it can't be beat for $8 at NewEgg.com. I have one, and runs like a charm. You didnt' mention O'C so it'd be perfect for a stock fan. If you want to O/C that's another story. ;)

I have heard that the Swiftech MC-462 has performance comparable to water cooling...you cant beat that!

Swifttech is the best Heatsink. The Volcano is the best value for a heatsink (dont believe the specs though!).

Taisol 760 copper bottom is best overall, meaning in price, performance, noiselessness and clip design.

I'd say the GlobalWin CAK38 would be one of the best values for the money, but considering for something like $4 more you can get the Glaciator which seems to be neck and neck with the MC462...I wonder which I'll be getting! hehe...too bad there's like a 4 week wait list for the Glaciator, or something like that :(

You know I bought the AVA266 and AMD 1.333, had a Super mini orb on it and my CPU was running a little warm. When I bought a Globalwin CAK-38 and tried to install it broke the damn clip when removing the old fan (real smart eh?).
Went and bought a AV7133 and find the board works better overall (performance and cooling)

mikef208 : No it still has incompatibilities with some mobo's especially with the A7A266.
So guys don't suggest him this as it's useless for him.

I agree with the rest of the choices. But if I were you I would get the Taisol or the Glaciator.
The Taisol can be found almost anywhere for around 35-40$. The Glaciator from the other hand can only be bought (at least for now) from the official site Millennium-Thermal at 40$

Check out the OCZ Gladiator.

I know. I know. OCZ sux. but they are just a distributer. the HSF is a very good one.

I've had very good experience with it. it is better than the taisols or the alphas. it isn't quite up to the Glaciator, but hey.

It is also much lighter and smaller than the glaciator so if your gonna be doing lan parties and so forth this is the hs for you.

really, it's the lightest of the Copper HS. it's better than all the aluminum hs.

Now if only someone other than OCZ would stock this item and sell it.

thanks for everyones input.
I still wonder though, will a copper hs turn green after a while?

Thanks for letting me know about the Switech White wolf, all I new is that it was redesigned to fit some motherboards, apparently not all though. It will fit the Kt7A though won't it?

Also has for OCZ, while I have not bought there in a while, I have heard they are under new ownership, so there service may be getting better.

Weight does matter.

Unless the cooler attaches to the board itself, I would not use a cooler that is well beyond the 300gm limit. A heavy copper cooler (e.g. 400 - 800gm) is going be a big problem if it is just attached to the socket.

The heatsink has a coating on it to prevent oxydation, and the HS grease will keep the copper plate from being exposed to the air. It shouldn't corrode.
