I agree. There are few instances where I like them, but for the most part I don't.

I don't listen to music to hear some technical virtuoso wail for 5 minutes.

You've been listening to the wrong guitar solos then.

Try *watching* Stevie Ray Vaughan play one of his solos and you'll be in awe.

Exactly. Most of the solos listed here are very musical and blend nicely. It's actually refreshing ;)

On the "Year and a Half in the Life of.." video, they showed how he was fighting with it and finally settled upon what was actually produced. The thing lasts almost a full minute.

Some good stepping...
It sounds good, but it doesn't seem that technically difficult (Unforgiven). Was that what you were referring to?

I've listened to everything listed here in this thread and think that all those songs would be better if the solos were removed. I guess I haven't watched them all though... But still that wouldn't affect how the song sounds.

I have watched him. Stevie Ray Vaughan is a different case. He brought true passion to his music. I will conceed that he was an unbelievable talent and is one of the "few instances" that I referred to.

My issue is with stale, uninspired technical playing. I have played guitar for over 6 years and I know a talented guitar player when I hear one.

Jimi playing Red House

Trey Anastasio ripping up fast songs is always fun, but the sweet, slow spots in songs like Horn and Lizards are perfect.

That is your choice. I listen to songs and when a guitar solo comes on I'll change the radio station or go to another track on the CD. They just never sound any good to me.

That's fine, many are a technical spectacle; many solos listed in this thread, though, are nothing like that (both that I named, as well as Pink Floyd and The Beatles, to name a few)

Pantera - Floods, Cemetary Gates
Metallica - Fade to Black, One
SRV - Pride & Joy
Ozzy - Crazy Train, No More Tears

and mpitts, to say none of these guys mentioned in the thread have a passion for playing is crazy. if they weren't passionate about it they would set the guitar down and move on.

4 out of 5 times it's just-self congratulatory guitar wanking. It's that 1 in 5 times that rocks.

I didn't feel like reading all those posts, so someone may have already said this but, the best bass guitar solo is Maxwell Murder by Rancid. It is insane!

Matt Freeman is a bass god. Don't forget his solo on Axiom from Rancid (2000). If you want to hear the female version of Matt check out Kim Chi on Open Sky by The Distillers.

Lots of great solos already mentioned...I'd like to throw in Martin Sexton's Gypsy Woman on his Live Wide Open album.

I have to agree. I have seen Matt play Maxwell Murder a couple times live and I am always in awe. Man, that guy is awesome.
