My friends and I want to make a blog so we can write about what is going on about our school since we are in college. That way we can write about the good things when they happen, and also be able to criticize things as well. One of my friend happens to write for our student newspaper and he hates how political it is about what you can and can't write. So anyway we wanted to find a good site that will allow us a free domain name and the ability to do a lot of things like user comments, custom themes, and polls. We don't mind having advertising by the host as long as we are able to have these customization options. I recently just started working on one for myself but I pay for a host. But since I pay, I can basically do anything I want. We also don't mind if the website uses blogging utilities like WordPress. So does anyone have any ideas?

I'm going to add that I didn't mean for 3 of these to post. It didn't reload the page as normal so I didn't think it worked.

Also, any suggestions other than blogger.com. I'm not sure how much I like it unless people can convince me about how great it is.

Is that better than wordpress.com?

The director of a charity I work with has just been bitten by the blog-bug, and I have no idea since my life is made complete through neffing rather than blogging.

If you self-host I like wordpress better. But if you're just going for a free version, blogger's is better.

As far as software goes, Wordpress is definitely better. However, the WP hosting from wordpress.com does not offer support for custom domain names, and there's a limit on image/video uploads. Blogger has no media restrictions, and it supports custom domains.
