What is the best free antivirus/spyware/malware and trojan remover software

Just like the title says, what is the best free antivirus/spyware/malware trojan remover available?
I seem to have a ton of trojans, spyware, malware, and viruses on my machine and it is time to clean house and get back on the non- infected end of things.

Thanks for the help.

You should check out the security forum and read the sticky. Personally, I like Avira AntiVir Free. Other than that I just use Windows Defender and the default Windows Firewall.

Then reformat. It's the only way to know for sure. Especially if you have a "ton," as you say.

The reformat is the really sure way, but good free programs to try
a-squared
AVG Anti-Spyware
Super AntiSpyware
Housecall- online AV
Ad-Aware
Spybot
a HJT advisor (I like pcpitstop>subforum HJT Logs

You need a better antimalware program or better surfing habits.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I am going to just reformat and re-install, that is what I ussually do.
I am also going to look into those free programs and possibly some shareware ones for the new install and I will definatly learn so better internet habits.

again, thanks

Do you know the programs you want?
One
AV, AS, & firewall
As many manual scanners as you want to use.

My nominee is DBAN for removal, and locking down Windows for prevention.

Does it make a difference whether you just do a reformat or use DBAN other than if you were to sell the PC and/or drive itself?

I *think* there are some rootkits that DBAN would eliminate whereas a conventional "delete the partition, create a new one and format it" reformat wouldn't, although it's beyond my capabilities to verify that scientifically. Easy-to-read writeup of recent rootkit that infects the MBR so it actually starts before the OS does.

The MBR rootkit ? known as "Mebroot" ? is very advanced and probably the stealthiest malware we have seen so far. It keeps the amount of system modifications to a minimum and is very challenging to detect from within the infected system.
