What is the best dvd writer to get at newegg right now?

Have not been keeping up. I have a Toshiba now whose main gripe I have is media incompatibility. It is picky, and will fail burns for no reason it seems.

I want a bulletproof writer.

I got myself an NEC from newegg a few months ago and that has run flawlessly.
I've burnt over 30 dvds without any coasters. It has even taken some of my sony
dvds (8x), burned them at 16x speed, and they worked perfectly in my set top dvd
player. All this for about $40 shipped. It's also dual layer, but I've never used that
aspect of it.

just my experience, but ive put my NEC 3520A through about 250 dvd writes, a couple dual-layer writes, about 200 or so CD/CDRW writes, a ton of dvd/cd reading (and tons cd-ripping), and it hasn't given me any problems. I've had it for 6months to a year I think. I would go check into the current NEC models and see how their reviews look. Check out cdfreaks.com (especially the reviews and the forums) and see how the various companies models are holding up. Do some research, and don't run with just one persons review/recommendation (including mine!).

Also, if you get the NEC, you can visit the CDFreaks forum for modifed firmware by Liggy&Dee. Their modified firmware for NEC drives adds new features and support for more media.

plextor has too many problems with compatibility and errors. when i owned that NEC dvd rw i had NO complaints about it. i have now upgraded to a SONY dru-810a and its doing great

When are they coming out with HD DVD's??? They should be crankin' those bad boys out... the next burner I get would hopefully have HD capability.

NEC are very good, once you've loaded the cracked firmware. Before that it was only good. BenQ would be my first choice.

I have an old Plextor 708A that's been great (it's in my MCE box now). But as I understand, Plextor's current SATA drive kinda stinks...if you go Plextor, stick with their IDE drives.

My main machine has an NEC 3500A that does nicely.

NEC Plextor Pioneer Benq, all work well. If you want plextor wait for a hot deal, but if you need it now NEC/Pioneer/Benq is good.

Plextor is mostly still the best. If you can't go that, NEC, Pioneer or Benq (the 1600 series, not the newer ones which aren't nearly as good). The Plextor PX-740A is similar to the Benq 1640. Plextor came out with the 750, but that is one to be avoided. Sony was mostly liteon, some of the newer ones are Benq - Sony's getting to be "like a box of chocolates" or a packager like Cendyne, etc.

The 755SA has problems, the vaporware 760SA is likely to totally reassert itself as top dog when it surfaces.

I like the NEC drives. My bro has one and he burns DVD's constantly (he does video editing) and my roommate has one and uses it alot too, no issues. My brother's 8X DVD+/- drive did burn out after about a year, but they replaced it with a 16X DVD +/- DL burner at no extra cost 🙂
