My uncle just got a Digital Rebel XT...that thing is absolutely sick. It gets my  but i'm sure someone here will shoot it down with photography artillery.

yes but it would be easier to juist rent a camera, ive printed 30x40 from a 6mp DSLR and it looked fine at the correct distance

Is there any certain software that can automatically stich the photos together or you need to do it by hand on a PC with tons of RAM?

This should get the job done.

That's a medium format camera.

Edited for technical correctness.

Body only:

Under $750: Nikon D50
Under $1000: Nikon D70s/Canon 350D
Under $2000: Nikon D200
Under $3000: Canon 5D

And you can make that print size with any of the above cameras. You will probably notice a small jump in print image quality close-up if you step up to a D200/5D, and another small jump if you step up to something like the Canon MarkII Ds.

You asked for the best. There you are, assuming you want a 35mm body.

There are 40k dollar 39 mp cameras coming out. Kinda pricy I think.
