What is the best defragging software for win2k and win9X?
I hear that the defraggers that are included in the OS'es are OK, but there are better ones out there.
What do you guys use? No norton though please. Unless there is a way to just use Speed disk and disk doctor, I don't want the whole Systemworks on my system.

You can install/use speed disk and disk dr only with a Norton "custom" Installation. Diskeeper [6.0?] is another defragger that ive heard is good, I cant really tell if it is any better than Norton, so i just use norton now ...

Diskeeper is the only thing i have heard of that is comparable to Norton speed disk

I've tried PerfectDisk, Diskkeeper, Norton SpeedDisk, O&O Defrag 2K, & one more (can't remember). For some reason, I always come back to using Diskkeeper as it's pretty quick and can defrag all hard drives (others can do that as well but not as pretty as Diskkeeper). I don't think it really matters which one you use (I admit I lack the technical advantages/disadvantages of those programs). Anyone knows which defrag program is most effective and efficient?

From what I have experienced (O&O, SD, DisKeeper, MS Built-in) is that SD takes the longest, but is the most complete defragmenter I have used. O&O is way to confusing and doesn't improve system performance. DisKeeper is great in a network as you can schedule and control all Workstation installations from one central point. And the MS Built-in is just a watered-down version of DisKeeper. Executive Software (makers of DisKeeper) helped Microsoft build the Defragmenter that comes with Windows 2000.

Like I said, I like SD. There is one major problem though (besides it being slow). You cannot use SD on a Terminal Server session. Symantec hasn't created an API that will work with Terminal Services. Symantec does use their own proprietary API that attaches to the FileSystem API, and works with it. This gives you the ability to defragment the MFT while online. If you wanted to defrag the MFT with the others, you would have to reboot the system and that system would be down for about 1 hour.

EDIT

You can buy SD seperately for Windows 2000, but not for Windows 9x/ME.

I use VoptME. Seems to be very fast and reliable compared to others I've used in the past which were slower than turtles. Just do a search in google for the site ;)
