Well, with the choice of either going Intel dual core, or Intel dual core, I'd definately go with the Intel dual core. :p

Go with AMD X2, they're superior ATM.

And take less power, way more stable, and way faster than the 840 (non ee, close to same price)

i vote for the 4400+ as well. Or, if you cant find that, the 4200+ is pretty close in performance. Intel dual cores are a joke, performance sucks and mobos are expensive. The only thing the Pentium D has going for it is that it has CPUs in the $250-300 price point, but that clearly isnt an issue with this guy. Also, for anybody whining that AMDs dual cores aren't available, here are a few places that have the 4400 in stock:

You may go with the intel crappy dualcores 820, but your will experience exterme heat and system unstabilities. GO with X2.

I think the 2.8 Pentium D at 250 dollars is an utter steal if you are big w/mulittasking and video encoding.

Definitely the 4400+. Definitely worth the $540 I paid for it.

Either a soild Venice core (ie 3500+) or a 3700+ (San-diego). Do you honestally need an X2? Especially when they wont make it past '06...

What, and they'll be making Venice or SanDiego single cores past '06 so its somehow a better buy?

SanDiegos aren't cheap, and you won't be paying twice as much for a chip that has 2x the cores...I could understand suggesting a sub $200 Venice and then recommending to overclock it...

HOWEVER, it is usually the case that when the person is willing to spend a lot of money on a CPU it isn't because they can't afford it.

Since you DIDN'T recommend overclocking a single core Venice or Sandiego, the ones you recommended will NOT be as fast as what he could afford even under single core restrictions and $600.

The X2 4400+ will take carry your system a lot longer than a single core will, I don't know exactly what you're trying to do here but I think I have a pretty good idea.

dont listen to them. if you have $600 to spend on a cpu, spend it. BUT if you are a gamer, its best to invest in the most expensive video card possible, and you can get a cheaper cpu. if you have the money for a really expensive gpu and cpu, thats great. if you arent a gamer, CPU is the BIGGEST concern. 4400+ is the king. :)
