well.. maybe not ever...

but by the time we can... we'll become those ol' folks that drive below the speed limit.

;)

(as for me, i say never. i'm a firm believer of controlled driving with speed.)

i think the best way to look at it would be if you could only have one car for the rest of your life

say get an m5 and exchange it for a new one every few years.

I like it because its fast, practical (except for the cost) ie sedan , trunk space, beautiful luxurious interior, 5-seater

its versatile

McClaren on the other hand sure its fast but say if you were given one for free would could you honestly say you would be happy with it as a primary car ie you get a new mclaren every 3 years for your old one but you have to agree to not own/drive any other cars

would you agree to that?
i wouldnt but thats just me
OK well in the case of what car would you want that would always be updated every 3 years and you can't own anything else the m5 would likely fit the bill because it's functional beyond just nice and fast.

Here is why i think my specV is a better car than the M5.

*only 180hp, 4cyl engine.. which mean i can get up to 30 miles to the gallon... very important, especially with todays high gas prices
*1/4 mile in 15.1, 0 -60 in 6.5 not as fast as the M5-- but those 2 seconds mean i pay about 1/10 what i would for an M5 in insurance.. and still get a really fast car. (top speed, 145 [limited])
*braking--- 120 feet... 3 feet away from the bmw.

okay, so as far a specs go- maybe the M5 is a little better.... but i'd still have to drive it to believe it. It probably rides like a 2 ton brick... becuase face it-- thats what it is. You put 400 horses behind anything and it will go fast.

and then throw in cost of repairs... 100 dollars worth of damage on my nissan probably translates into 800 dollars on a bmw.. not to mention you have to take it special body shops becuase not every place will service a european car.... maintenence is higher..

not to mention the completley unreasonable starting price. for 70k, think of how much other stuff you could buy.

I'm not saying my nissan is the best car out there... i'm just saying the M5 isnt even close to the best.

That's a sweet car. What kind of mileage does it get though?

Turbodiesel golf's are great... but if I had $70k to waste, I'd want a Porsche for sure. :) But you're right, for an every day, much more practical comfortable sports sedan, the BMW M5 is excellent.

Ok, I think some guidelines should be set here...

1) High quality and reliability
Longest lasting trucks on the road
2) Capable of driving from L.A. to NYC
I went from Denver to L.A. with a 7000lb trailor on the back, lets hook 7000lbs to either of those cars ;)
3) Capable of enduring inclement weather as much as mechanically possible (4x4, AWD)
He he he, can go over a 12" log
4) Can haul more than just a couple suitcases
I could move an entire womans closet in one trip
5) Comfortable ride that even your mother would enjoy
it ain't like a car, but it's IFS and has poly bushings
6) Better than average performance in ALL areas (braking, handling, acceleration, top speed)
138ft , 0-60 just under the 2001 Lightning 5.2~ (time slip to prove it ;) TS 124~ All this power and still 19mpg, hows that M5 :)
7) Can be serviced in all major cities
It's the General, I can get it serviced in space ;)
8) Fun to drive
I have all kinds of fun and can go on more roads :)
9) Vehicle you'd be happy to be seen in
I get many compliments :)
10) Supurb active and passive safety features
I saw a Volvo collide with a GM truck a few month's back, who was the safest car?? the Silverado drive off the scene, the other was flatbed
11) Not high on the list of theved cars
It's not :)

dont tell me your dream car is a Chevy Silverado

laust is right though.. an M5 isnt practical for most people.. it can't tow or haul things.. everybody needs something big once in a while.. like for moving or vacations..

as far as best all around.. i think i'd say the honda oddysey..
seats 7 (comfortably.. not cramming 3 adults in a tiny back seat like the m5)
240hp - tows anything you put behind it. my dad uses it for towing his boat
fits so much cargo its unbelieveable.
20+ mpg
its a honda.. so its super reliable.. and can be serviced anywhere..

and so on.

Good call, the SUV/Minivan/Truck market is as big as it is because it is TRULY versatile :)

I was just implying his post SEEMED bias because he obviously owns one

how many people own M5s i surely dont and his truck could kick my 91 cavalier's ass
I just drive it in the summer and leave it at home when i'm in college
I dont care and when I get out of school i'll buy myself a decent car not an M5 but more likey an accord/maxima/altima

honda odysee I could see your argument but a flatbed truck IMO is less versatile than a sedan because the odysee can do virtually anything a truck can except the off roading and very big cargo

EDIT: I guess a minivan or an SUV would be the best though I am not a fan of either
mainly because I associate bad driving with them ie women on their cell phones that always cut me off :|

still would pick the m5 tho

I have always had the need for versatility and why when people say "Overall" or "Jack of all trades" I just flock to it

here is a good way to think of it... say you are stuck with one car-- and cant use anything else.

well with the M5 there are going to be a lot of times you are out of luck and wishing you had another car... whether it be for going offroad, towing, hauling cargo / more passengers etc..

but with laust's truck i cant think of a single situation that it couldnt handle. Sure, its not the most ideal daily driver for making short trips around town... but it does everything, and goes everywhere. Something the M5 can't even come close to saying about itself. not to mention for the price, you could buy 2 - 3 trucks :)

Just my opinion. What do you think?

I think I would take an Audi RS6 over an M5.
Biturbo V8 with 450 hp/lb-ft, then chip it :) 500+ HP yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
+ Quattro

Adios M5

In some ways, the M5 performs better than a porsche, unless your talking bout the turbos, which are insanely expensive. But I'm talking about 1 car. Not buying a cheaper car then making up for what it lacks by buying another car.

people don't buy porsches just for performance, but because they are sexy.

If I HAD an M5, i'd probally not drive it as a daily driver, making the purpose of the car slim to none.

But, being practical is always good. Middle class cars around 15k-25k are good bets, decent performance, decent features, decent styling.

In the end, its whatever people feel is good for them. Some people feel 100% comfortable in a KIA while someone will say its a POS.

Honestly, how often are you going to me moving? And for vacations, unless you have a family of 7, you won't need a minivan. Plus, how often are you goign to be driving with a full carload of 7? Are you ALL goign to the same place every single time you drive? And I wouldn't call the back seat cramped... the m5 is based off the 5 series, which has plenty of room in the back. Same with the boat, most people aren't towing a boat everywhere they go. As for the mileage, its about the same. So I don't think the Oddysey is a good vehicle for most people, unless they are going to be carrying 7 people while towing a boat every time they go out. Just my thoughts.

...stuff like that. The M5 and S4 size up nicely! :D

Well, my Mercury Marquis fits that bill rather nicely....as does a 2003 Freightliner.....I'll take the Mercury. I can buy 3 for that price. Get say 15 years each and 150,000 miles with damn near nothing nut oil changes and still have 10 grand to put away.

Btw, I'll take my Mercury a very heavy car, over roads that will stop your BMX or was that BMW, dead in it's tracks.....Let's see...
1]High qiality and SUPBERB reliability.
2]Drive it anywhere...mine gets 26mpg on the highway....
3]I'll take a heavy rear wheel drive anytime...
4]You WISH that 70,000 dollar car rode like a Merc!
5]Your mother wants my car! Get over it!
6]For a car it's size my Merc has no peer....
7]Can be serviced everywhere!
8]With the police interceptor option....it is a blast to drive!
9]Folks that have rode in one, and if lucky, driven one KNOW what I'm talking about.
10]Large heavy cars survive better....PERIOD!
11]Steal it? Mine is insured.....

Oh, let's see...

12]Highest repeat buyer ratio in the industry.....

And all that for 20,000 dollars......EACH!

Besides, it's the DRIVER and not the CAR !

70,000 bucks says a fool and his money is soon parted........

How stylish and popular is a Mercury Marquis? I have never heard one of those, less hear anybody say that would be THE car to get. And with a 0-60 time of 8.4 seconds, this car is pretty slow if you ask me. It has a mere 200 hp.

To quote auto.com
"Nonetheless, no one is going to confuse the handling of a Grand Marquis with a BMW. The Grand Marquis is about comfortable transportation, not spirited driving. "

im not sure this car is fun to drive. Perhaps to carry people and things, but not to drive for thrills.
Speaking of reliability, everyone knows just how reliable an american car is...

Plus, its not the driver, its mostly the car. If I gave you a toyota corolla, could you honest say you'll have a blast driving it? I think not.

Other than a diesel ford or dodge 1 ton TOMINATOR hit the nail on the head. PLus mustang parts fit it's 4.6 for killer engine mods!
