What is the best cable modem and router out there rightnow?

Im going to get a cable modem and a router soon. Therefore, I need to know which one is the best cable modem out there and the router for it too, thx.

Cable Modem, just get the one with the lastest DOCSIS(sp?) Standard.

It really doesn't matter as long as your cable modem follows this standard called DOCSIS. The theoretical limit is 27Mb/s, which will never happen, so the bottleneck is the cable network, not the modem.

Cisco makes a cable modem/router combo that uses a the Cisco IOS. Check e-bay. model
uBR924.

Visit your cable co.'s website to see which modems they support. Sometimes they will run a special if you purchase their "house" modem. The Motorola Surfboard 5100 is popular and costs around 90.00

Linksys (Cisco) and D-Link sell excellent so-ho cable/dsl routers for around 50.00 that are simple to configure and allow multiple pc's to share a single IP. It also keeps your ports "stealthy" and reduces the chance of someone jacking with your goods.

If you sign up via CC, the modem is usually FAR. The one they give you is like an SB4200, and it works well enough.

what about fiber optic? is there a fiber optic router out there for home users? or only for business right now????

Fiber optic isn't worth the cost. Just get cable and you should be happy with it. I'd recommend a Motorola Surfboard modem.
