Red Horse extra strenght beer... comes in big ass bottles. Apparently it is brewed in countries other than the Philippines now.. and I have read those are not as good.

As a recent beer convert (I am a wine lover)

I have let my germen Heritage come through and have acquired a taste for heavy German bocks and dopplebocks

My current favorite is Spaten Optimator

If you like heavy dark beers, try this one out

Optimator is good. But i usually drink New Castle as my default beer.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout if I am going for something special. For something less dense, I like Amstel Light or Newcastle.

Just got back from Amsterdam and really enjoyed the belgium ales there. Usually prefer hoppy american pale ales, but this trip really helped me re-define the beer I enjoy:

Favs:

Westvleteren 8 and 12 - the 12 is considered by many to be the "best beer in the world". Its brewed in small batches by monks in Belgium. You have to go to the Abbey to buy it and it is pretty hard to find in most of the world. It dosnt even have a label...just a bottle cap confirming whats inside.

Rochfort 8 and 12. Good solid Belgium ales.

Affligem - damn good and drinkable belgium dubbel

Le Chouffe Nice - specialty dark belgium ale brewed once a year by the company. Damn good IMO.

As for american beers:
Arrogant Bastard
90 Shilling
Fresh Hop
Maharaja IPA

Cheers

Bastard. I've heard they've had it at The Trappist in Oakland before. Awesome bar.

If you ever go to Amsterdam check out Cafe Gollem. They have the westvleteren 8 and 12 and so does the liquor store across the street.

Here in Denver we have a Belgium Bar called Cheeky Monk that carries some rare stuff and so does Falling Rock Tap House occasionally.

Funny thing is I did not know anything about the beer until this trip. I was in the bar asking the locals what I should have and they all started talking about it like it is the Holy Grail of beer. Angels started singing when they brought it up from the cellar and monks started chanting when they opened it.

Old Capital Brewery in Iowa City used to stock St. Bernardus ABT 12 on tap.

If you think it's good out of a bottle....fresh off the tap is divine.

I'll agree on the Smithwick's. Good stuff. I also favor Newcastle Brown Ale. Fat Tire Ale is not too bad either.

I like citrus flavored beers.

I'm assuming you meant Franziskaner

Me having a favorite beer is as impossible as having a favorite song. I could list 20 favorites at least but that might take a while even limiting it to 20

I have been to the 'dam, but its been ten years. I'm way overdue for a trip. Nice suggestions, everyone.

You should go... Really cheap airfare these days and the euro has lost a bit of value lately. Traveling on the dollar is not as bad as it was.

Cafe Gollem has 200+ beers, 95% of which are belgium ales and lambics. At 8-12% alcohol you are a bit limited on how much you can really drink however. Luckily my hotel was close to the bar because otherwise I'm pretty sure I would have gotten lost in the crazy maze of alleys or wound up in a canal somewhere after a full night of drinking.

anyone know of a website that lists larger liquor stores that have a big variety where I might be able to find some of these? I know some places back home, but here at school I don't know of any bigger places. I'm in hamden, CT, not too far from new haven if anyone knows of a place

My beer drinking buddy from CT tells me: "Liquor depot. One in Avon and one in new Britain."

Beer Advocate has a list of stores by town in CT w/ reviews
