What is the best Anti-Virus program out there?

I have used Norton 2000 and 2001 for the last 2 years and have had no virus problems. Is there a better virus program out there? Any free ones that are better than norton? Which is the best?

IMO the best AV program is Norton 2002. It saved my neck alots of times by finding a virus within a e-mail sent to me. But the people did not know there computer was infected because the e-mail is sent to every one in there address book. Since then my ISP started a service that can scan for
spam e-mail's and computer virus befor it get's to my in-box. I can even block e-mail addresses or whole domains if I want too.

I all ready added like 10 whole domain's to my blocked list since they send nothing but spam any ways.

I like Trend Micro's PC-cillin 2000. It's cheap and they don't charge for virus pattern updates like Norton.

Some people say F-Prot is very good, but it's VERY expensive.

eno, I am currently using Norton 2001, and must say from personal experience, it's much better than any other a/v I've used in the past, especially McAfee.

I think InoculateIT is a nice product too. It scans quickly, it has updates almost daily, and doesn't take up many resources...

NAV 2002 is very thorough, but seems to have heavy overhead (system slows quite a bit). Does the free AVG antivirus slow down the system much? If so, I may just try it!

I used to use the free IT Antivirus before going to Norton.

However Norton does slow stuff down on a slower machine. How good is AVG compared to norton?

I upgraded from Norton 2001 to 2002. 2002 is top heavy (takes more resources) and you don't have as much control over it. A couple of bucks for virus defs is nothing in the scheme of things. It has saved me a couple of times with infected e-mail. Some other programs may have caught the virus too but I know Norton worked. Also I had a conflict with Pagis Pro 3 and Norton 2002 and had to go back to 2001. I run it on 7 machines and have been satisfied.

I think I'm going to try AVG mainly because I get so frustrated trying to find subscriptions for NAV. I got NAV 2000 on a new Dell in Dec. 2000 and it seems like you just have to buy the new product to get updates. I don't even remember the update ever working, probably 90 days?

Best Buy is running promotions where you get NAV 2002 cheap with tax software, but I still feel like trying AVG because their web page looks very straightforward and I'm hoping the product is less bloated than Norton.

But, I'll have to admit, using a basically unknown virus program makes me a little uneasy. Why do you guys trust it?

Yes it`s excellent like I`ve said in my previous post.I`ve AVG installed in both my Win98 and WinXP rigs,it`s not bloated by any means &
few weeks back I went to a website and it warned me about a script virus that was trying to download so I know it`s doing a good job.

I`ve a friend that got fed up of paying every year for Norton`s updates and decided to give it a shot ,he`s still using it right now.
I`m not saying it`s better then Norton`s but for a free anti-virus program it`s probably the best free one.

🙂

OK, I'm in for AVG. Looks good so far, I like the interface. Guess I'll have to find some dubious web sites to see if I can set it off.
