What is the best alternative to Napster?

i've been using Bearshare lately after reading about it in these forums and it's prety good. I like how it lets you search for basically all types of files including MV's. The thing i don't like is the over-generalized search engine which isn't as file-type specific and also it is harder to find good connections IMO.

Go download Napigator and connect up to the MusicCity servers. Each of their servers are cross-linked together and faster than Napster's used to be. 34+ gigs online at this very moment. 🙂

There will NEVER be a totally equal alternative to Napster but, like Supra says, Bearshare is about the closest although not for an uninformed user. You should educate yourself about packets and how they work. If not, you'll just slow down the whole network and get some people irate. Also I don't like what I've been hearing about the Gnutella worm that is a very real and serious risk if you don't know how to defend yourself.

Oh, and let's not forget, I don't think you can choose a bitrate for your songs either! Most are available at only 128kbps which is VERY unacceptable to me, at least.

Just tried WinMX v2.1 and I must say that it truly rocks 🙂

I was very sceptical about this program because the previous version crashed constantly on my PC, but after I've download 7+ songs within 30 minutes, I must say that it's not a bad program after all.

I had the previous version and got a newer version (2.0) last week and it rocks

The searches are A LOT faster than napster and it also searches multiple servers at one time.

It is the closest thing to napster that I could find. In fact, I might even like it a little better
