What is the best air purifer to get?

Consumer Reports gave the Ionic Breeze Air Purifier (the ones with no fan) a poor rating.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I did some online research on this a while back and the ones in my price range (anywhere under $300) that consistantly got good reviews were some $225-275 models from whirlpool - mine is a whirlpool whispure 510. I also saw these at sears a couple weeks ago under the Kenmore brand name.

They are about the size of a normal $10 box fan - 2 feet tall x 19" wide x 5" deep, give or take a bit.

I bought mine online from abtelectronics.com and overall it was a very positive experience - well packed, showed up before I expected it, price was cheap compared to others, etc.

As for the filter itself - after I got a golden retriver, I put the filter in my bedroom and leave it on overnight and occasionally during the day. The air definitely smells "cleaner" in there.

On the low speed setting the filter doesn't make too much noise. Anything other than that, and you can definitely hear it.

Edit: Since you mentioned the ionic breezes, I was assuming price wasn't an object - for what it's worth, when I was researching I started in the $50-$100 range, but the overwhelming sentiment seemed to be that those didn't really do much good. These $250 whirlpool whispure models were the ones that were being recommended for people with real allergy problems etc, who couldn't afford the "good" $1000 air filters.

Edit2: Some more stuff, while I'm thinking about it - this unit has 2 seperate "filters" and has little lights to indicate when (time based) you should replace each. My light just turned red for the "prefilter" which is a cheap ($10-15?) thin filter that lays on top of the real hepa (I think like $50?) filter that does the real filtering... My hepa filter light is at the 1/4 used mark, so at this rate I figure the normal filters will last at least 4-5 months and the hepa should last 14-18 months or more.

listen to consumer reports, they recently did another lineup of those things. course the breeze still blows. either online(fee) or library..free

my parents have a few ionic models, I forget the name but it was reccomended by their doctor. I am amazed at the difference inthe air quality in the house. they have 2 dogs and there always used to be that "dog" smell now zero smaell. it was 2-300. i'll find out the brand later.

When researching a HEPA filter, remember to pay more attention to replacement filter costs than the initial cost of the unit.

A little trick I've heard of people doing is getting a furnace filter and cutting it to fit over the air intake of the HEPA filter, like a pre-pre filter. It greatly reduces the number of replacement filters you go through.

well, I know that everybody says they don't do a good job - but I was given two as a gift.

and they work great for me (I smoke), no filters and what not. I love them. Without them my basement smells like smoke - with them it smells good and fresh.

I bought an Ionic Pro from best buy a couple weeks ago. Its the knockoff of the Sharper image's one.
It was $150. I'd say its been working pretty well. No filters is nice, just have to clean off the collection blades once a week. There's always plenty of dust caked on them so i'd say its been doing its job.

I have been using an Ionic Breeze for abotu 5 months. When I first got it, it didn't work. I called the company "Sharper Image" and they were very helpful, but all their trouble shooting didn't get the thing working. They sent me a postage paid sticker to send the thing back. I sent it back and they sent me a newer model with two free car ionic breezes and one smaller ionic breeze. It works great. I use it for a rather large room, 20x20 and it works great. Always a great smell. It's great not to have to buy filters. I clean the blades about once every 2 weeks and thats it. I would certainly do it again. I leave it on all the time, but it is very quiet.

I bought one of those Ionic Breeze things from the sharper image gadget store and it's a POS. Don't waste your money. I don't know what's out there but gadget store stuff is junk.

This is a good topic, i was just thinking about it.

I really get lots of dust in my bedroom where I also have all my computer equipment. Today I stripped the entire computer to clean it out it?s so filthy with dust balls, meanwhile another room that has a computer never gets as much dust as my room.

Just an example, I put this brand new cd on my computer desk on Sunday and by Wednesday it already had a dust coating.

I can't imagine how much of this stuff I breathe at night.

I need to get me something to reduce dust in my room.

I'm glad I didn't buy an Ionic Breeze POS air filter.

Instead I bought a Honeywell 18225 for a great price from CostCo, it came with 3 additional filters.

It's quiet and works great.
