Well, I have tested the Gateway FHD2400, HP2408H and the Samsung 245BW. The best out of those three for image (without calibration hardware) is the Samsung 245BW...

HP is way to blue (atleast mine was) and the gateway had horrible backlight bleeding

However, I do want to keep things below $600 also.

I don't have a problem with TN panels (I'm using a 17" Hanns.G right now).

I like...no...love glossy screens!!
I play a lot of games, so I need a fast panel.

My main interest thus far has been the Gateway FHD2400.

Edit: I wouldn't mind a non-TN panel though, just as long as it is fast enough to not ghost...

HP W2408H.
Looks gorgeous with its glossy screen.

It's a TN, so i'm not a big fan, but i find the glossy finish ones do mask some of the viewing angles issues somewhat, so it's semi-tolerable.

BENQ

Okay...

The NEC is not slighty outside my price range...its way outdoors...:p

The BenQ is one that I've looked at a few times but that is probably stretching me a bit too thin.

I saw some nice reviews on this cheapo Acer...
What you guys think...its glossy.......:D

I'm figuring that my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop screen is TN panel (please correct me if I'm wrong) but if that is the case and it looks that good with the glossy screen...
Then I would have no problem whatsoever buying a glossy TN panel...I'd be sold.

Is it a TN panel?

1) What is the cost of a BenQ FP241W (if you can find it)?
2) How much did you pay for yours?

Amazon has the HP W2408 for $439. It's $160 cheaper than most other websites.

Nothing. It's brand new. I think HP has a rebate on them right now but Amazon goes further. In case you're interested, it's Brightview and glossy. It's also S-TN.

The Amazon deal on the HP W2408 seems quite an amazing one.

I want to know whether to just get a 24" or spend extra to get a 24" with features...it's for gaming mainly and movies to a lesser extent.
Eventually might become an HDTV a few years from now when I change it (if the one I buy has HDMI).

Acer P243WAid

I've had an NEC 2470 for about a week, and IMO its worth the extra $. Highest brightness and contrast ratio of any 24" non-TN, along with fastest response time (6ms) and lowest input lag (33ms or less average) in its class. It does cost a bit much, but once I plugged it in and saw no dead or stuck pixels, no backlight bleeding, no visible ghosting or smearing, no perceptible input lag, and none of the other things I feared, I decided it was worth every penny.

The Acer and HP are TNs, which explains the low price. There are two 24" non-TNs that are priced lower than the others: ViewSonic VX2435 (S-MVA, $559 after rebate) and Planar PX2411W (S-PVA, $599). I'd get one of them over a TN unless your only intended use is gaming. The Planar is a bit faster (6ms vs. 8ms) and probably has less input lag than the ViewSonic, and comes with Planar's 3 year "customer first" warranty.

I know it is a TN panel, but yesterday I got my Samsung 245bw, and it is incredible. I looked at this and the 245T and I could not see no difference, so I went with the cheaper one. I love my TN panel 245bw.

I cannot imagine how it's possible to not see a difference between a 24" S-PVA & a 24" TN.

All you have to do is move your head an inch or two to see the horrifying color shifting all over the place.

But eh, each to their own i guess.

OP, as was mentioned earlier, the LG L246WP is worth checking out if you can find it.

Two of my buddies own it; it's a very nice display.

I looked at both of them for quite a while (both were in stock), and the only difference I could see was the pricetag. Granted, I did not play any games on both of them side by side, but I have been using this 245bw yesterday and today at home, and so far it looks phenominal.

I think people blow the TN thing WAY out of proportion.

Amen to that, there is a difference, but I've had screens with both panels. And honestly the different was decent but not "OMGWTFBBQ!" the difference between the S-PVA and my CRT, now that was a pretty big difference. S-PVA has better IQ, but people who act like TN's suck and only S-PVA's have IQ, well us CRT for life people can say the same thing. your S-PVA's aren't THAT GREAT. Better than TN's is about it...

My intended use is indeed gaming and due to budgetary constraints, I am now lowering the LCD budget.

Maximum = $450 (no rebates)

That Acer I linked above is looking like increasingly good deal.
I just wish I could find some reviews (apart from Newegg's customer reviews, which have been rather great so far).

Yes, it is a Glossy TN panel but how good is it?
I ask because there are different quality TNs (226BW lottery comes to mind - S Panel).....

I just picked up the LG246 for 359 on clearance at Best Buy. Not sure if its national thing but all the BB in my area (Houston) had it 359. For 359 dollars, I dont think you can go wrong.

Like I said, Cheex, if you're looking for a bargain 24" check out that OptiQuest I mention above. It's $80 less and appears to me to be more than good enough. My colleague at work loves it. I also link to it above.

It seems really nice but the lack of HDMI there kinda breaks the deal for me.

Reason:
My plans are to use whatever monitor I buy now, as an "HDTV" when I upgrade next time...so I want it to have HDMI.

The Optiquest has VGA, DVI, 5ms, not sure if its glossy, nice aesthetics.
The Acer P243W has VGA, DVI & HDMI, 2ms, glossy screen, nicer aesthetics (IMO).

I don't doubt that the ViewSonic is a good monitor but the Acer has a few things that really sway me to it.
Plus, my father uses an Acer 17" and it has been really good for him so, I'm leaning in Acer's direction.
The Acer P243W is now @ $390.

I guess my price limit is now $400...:p

Thanks though...

Don't like that resolution anyway.

I think the sweet spot is indeed 1920x1200...FTW!!

Has anyone seen the Star Logic/Starlogic MB24W? There is one review on Amazon that claims it uses an AUO P-MVA panel, but I'm skeptical.

What company makes Star Logic anyway? Can't find any trace of a website.
