I was interested in the HP 2408W, but it's a TN model and glossy.

I then looked at the Dell 2407WFT-HC, but is has a well known ghosting "feature" that Dell refuses to fix.

Any recommendations for the best in this price range?

Yeah, for that kind of money, definitely the BenQ FP241W if you can find it since it's been discontinued.

The Gateway 24" is $550 and everywhere I've seen has given it ace reviews. I'm guessing it's not one of the crummy panels they stick in the $300-400 24" models, and it also has DVI *and* HDMI on it as well as height and swivel adjustments.

Oh, and it looks really nice. :) (IMO)

I looked at it before I got mine and it didnt hold a candle to the Benq, but then again not much does.

In what regard? Image quality? Color range? Viewable angles?

Pretty much IQ, thats the most important thing to me. It just seemed cheap compared to the Benq.

i am personally looking at the planar px2411w. i've had planar monitors before and most of the reviews of this are pretty good.

its just over $600 on amazon.com from amazon. free shipping and no tax in most states though. main bad thing about it is it doesnt have the number of inputs the benq has, but its cheaper and their service and supported is reputed to be ery very good.

you could look at the lg 246wp also. its $599, @ best buy and has hdmi. a month or so ago though best buy had it on sale for $449 which is a great price.

I just grabbed an LG246WP from BB, they are on close out, like most manu LG is going "TN" for future 24":(
It is the same monitor as the online only LG245WP and both have the same panel as the popular BenQ FP241W
They are normally an over-priced $599.00 at BB, marked down to $479.00-I got my display model for $439.00 :)
Ran all the popular tests and it passed with flying colors, no stuck/dead pixels, backlight bleed or other probs. They also are reputed to have one of the lowest "input lag" numbers
It also rivals my "old" Samsung 215TW in IQ !
Anyway, with the trend towards TNs in this size it's the best deal under $500 if you can find one left ;)

Every Gateway 24inch monitor I have seen has had really bad backlight bleeding. I don't know about you, but seeing the backlight bleed around the edges of the screen is a huge turn off for me. Of course, I haven't had a chance to play around with the brightness settings much on the ones I've seen, so maybe with considerably lowered brightness it'd reduce the problem a little.

Personally though I'd go with the benq if you can find one. It is what I am going to buy if I can find one when I get the money in the next few weeks. Otherwise I'll wait and see how their new 24inch monitor in the future looks.

Never had it with mine.

I get it with mine, but usually only when I just turned the monitor on and then only once. I think in about 6-7 months of use it only happened during gaming once. I've learned to live with it. I wonder if it's the included DVI cable.

Hmmm, Optiquest has one that Isaw on a colleague's desk which IT bought for $368. It looked very nice to me, and didn't appear to be a dull TN panel. I could be wrong, sorry, I don't have the model number.

***EDIT*** Here it is!

TN panel, no HDMI or HDCP support = awful

Looked pretty good to me for $369. With AnyDVD you don't need HDCP. I do tend to agree, though, I'd spend a bit more. But how do you know whether it's a TN panel or the alternative? No one appears to list the panel type.

I know it is a TN panel, but yesterday I got my Samsung 245bw, and it is incredible. I looked at this and the 245T and I could not see no difference, so I went with the cheaper one. I love my TN panel 245bw.

I cannot imagine how it's possible to not see a difference between a 24" S-PVA & a 24" TN.

All you have to do is move your head an inch or two to see the horrifying color shifting all over the place.

But eh, each to their own i guess.

OP, as was mentioned earlier, the LG L246WP is worth checking out if you can find it.

Two of my buddies own it; it's a very nice display.

Go to TFT Central (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/) and enter the model number in the panel part database and it will tell you which panel it uses.

Also, if viewing angles=160 degress or less, its a TN.

Well there is one big difference: the 245T has an average of 3-4 frames of lag.

On 24" LCDs with 33ms (2 frames) or less, I can't tell there's any input lag. Even when I know its there and go looking for it, I can't find it. But 50+ ms even I notice immediately, in Windows or in games.

Everybody's threshold for noticing is probably different, but when you consider that even the best 24" ever made (NEC 2490) has about 33ms average, that gives you something to shoot for; a non-TN 24" with 33ms or less, and that's a very short list: NEC 2490, NEC 2470WNX, BenQ FP241W, and LG L245/246. There are conflicting opinions on the Dell 2407 and I can't find any numbers for the Planar 24", but unless you can afford the $1100-1200 for the 2490, the list becomes even shorter...

I looked at both of them for quite a while (both were in stock), and the only difference I could see was the pricetag. Granted, I did not play any games on both of them side by side, but I have been using this 245bw yesterday and today at home, and so far it looks phenominal.

I think people blow the TN thing WAY out of proportion.

I'm also seeking a monitor.

Fact is, I want 1920x1200 but not limited to 24". Range is from 24" to 28".
However, I do want to keep things below $600 also.

I don't have a problem with TN panels (I'm using a 17" Hanns.G right now).

I like...no...love glossy screens!!
I play a lot of games, so I need a fast panel.

My main interest thus far has been the Gateway FHD2400.

Edit: I wouldn't mind a non-TN panel though, just as long as it is fast enough to not ghost...

Yeah, I'm still very happy with my older 20.1" Dells. I'd definitely consider one of those Optiquest units after having seen one for myself, it's noticeably sharper and brighter than my Dells.
