Just curious. It seems that a lot of people prefer encoding their DVDs in this format. Why not just convert them to SVCD?

why not just leave them as dvd's?

because a typical dvd in its original format is about 5-7gigs, and a good divx rip ranges from 700-1400megs which make them much easier to distribute

I am just going to inject here and say because I can play an SVCD on my DVD player on my big tv with surround sound speakers while sitting or laying on my big couch with a bunch of other people/

My divx movies I can play on my computer with my 17'' monitor and 2 altec lansing speakers and sit on my bed or my chair.

I built a computer out of old thrown away parts complete with remote control and I hook it up to the big TV and surround system at my lake house and I watch my Divx movies with large groups of people with better quality and no need fo a CD change on most movies. So your point is?

I'm not really sure, but I think with the introduction of DVD-R/W drives DivX is pretty quickly becoming obsolete. Who needs to mess with it, getting only one soundtrack and much lower quality? Yes, they're smaller in size... So what... If you get a legit DivX file from somewhere, and play it, that's OK, but why create that yourself? When you can backup your DVD using a DVD-R/W drive? Get DivX from others (non-copyrighted titles only, for example, home made movies, of course) and backup your DVDs using DVD-R. No need to mess with DivX IMVHO.

DivX isn't going to be obsolete until everyone has a personal T3 line. Streaming video is still a huge market, and methinks you're a little behind on the specs. 5.1 audio is now easily possible in a DivX, be it AC3 or Vorbis.

maybe on a weenie computer monitor. even then i can tell the difference between a 2cd rip and a dvd. not to mention the sound/features😛

SVCD is decent format but much larger and is great for burnning and watching on a dvd player.
Xvid and Divx are better quality and smaller file size (usually but nto always) you can find
movie in 2 or 3 CD sized file just like SVCD. So both our good depend on your use, if your
gonna watch on computer Xvid and Divx are best for you. If you want to burn and take to
watch on DVD players then SVCD are for you.

Doh, you must not get very good ones then cause ive seen some awsome rips with kick ass sound to.
Sure you cant beat DVD with a file 1/13Th the size but its pretty good considering.

Great for pron. You don't hate to go to a store to rent it. Don't you hate returning pron? It makes you feel like a loser. With SVCD, no one knows you are a loser!

kick ass sound? thats unlikely considering the bitrate. the ones i've seen are not pirate, they are of asian movies.

So Asian movies are not sold on DVD are are perfectly legal to rip? (...)

MPEG2 has very sh!tty compression, so with MPEG4 it is indeed possible to get the same quality with a much smaller file.

You need to take a used PIII 800 or better w/ 256MB, and network it to the said computer. Get a quiet CPU fan and a video card (cheap Radeon w/ the Remote Wonder) w/ a TV-out and a decent sound card. Then it's simple. Another good thing about DiVX is that even good DivX rips play over the 10mbps leg of the network.

Isn't TV-OUT w/ S-video still a little crappy? IE, if you used tv-out for a SVCD it would look a bit worse than the same svcd played in your standalone player.
